Book Description
Excerpt from The Life of Andrew Martin Fairbairn The writing of this book has been a labour of love. When it was first suggested to me I shrank from the task as one altogether beyond my powers. But I was impelled to undertake it in the end, not only by the wishes of Dr. Fairbairn's family, but by a deep sense of loyalty to one who was to me, as to so many others, both a master and a friend. This, however, has only increased the difficulty of the work. It is never easy to write about those we have admired and loved. The desire to avoid partiality often leads to the other extreme, and I am conscious that my attempts at appreciation may sometimes seem to err on the side of caution. I have tried to present a true portrait, and I may say that, in the effort to do so, I have come to appreciate far more deeply than I did before, not only the great intellectual capacity of the man, but also the essential nobility and simple beauty of his character and life. I have to thank the members of Dr. Fairbairn's family for giving me free access to all his papers. These consisted mainly of letters and notebooks. He kept no diary save for a week or two here and there, and there are long gaps in the correspondence at some of the most interesting stages in his career. The Making of Modern English Theology
Author: Daniel Inman
Publisher: Fortress Press
ISBN: 1451489579
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 228
Book Description
The Making of Modern English Theology is the first historical account of theology’s modern institutional origins in the United Kingdom. Having avoided the revolutionary upheaval experienced by continental institutions and free from any constitutional separation of church and state, English theologians were granted a relative freedom to develop their discipline in a fashion distinctive from other European and North American institutions. This book explores how Oxford theology, from the beginnings of the Tractarian movement until the end of the Second World War, both influenced and responded to the reform of the university. Neither becoming unbendingly confessional nor reduced to the secular study of religion, the Oxford faculty instead emerged as an important ecumenical body, rooted in the life and practice of the English churches, whilst still being located in the heart of a globally influential research university as a department of the humanities. This is an institutional history of reaction and radicalism, animosity and imagination, and explores the complex and shifting interactions between church, nation, and academy that have defined theological life in England since the early nineteenth century.

Hinterland Theology
Author: Alan P.F. Sell
Publisher: Wipf and Stock Publishers
ISBN: 1606083104
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 732
Book Description
Alan Sell maintains that systematic and constructive theology are best understood as the product of a conversation with the biblical writers, the heritage of Christian thought and the current intellectual environment. The conversation will benefit if the voices of hinterland writers are heard as well as those of the theological and philosophical 'giants'. In this book ten hinterland theologians associated with English Dissent are introduced and their writings are discussed. Thomas Ridgley, Abraham Taylor and Samuel Chandler wrote in the wake of the Toleration Act of 1689; George Payne and Richard Alliott responded to the Enlightenment and the Evangelical Revival; D. W. Simon, T. Vincent Tymms and Walter F. Adeney took account of modern biblical criticism, and Robert S. Franks and Charles S. Duthie respectively lived through and followed the heyday of liberal theology. The study reveals both adjustments and time-lags in theology, and shows how hinterland theologians can stimulate the ongoing conversation concerning theological method, philosophico-theological relations, the Trinity, the atonement and ecumenism.
