Rather than depicting Herod as the merciless author of the Massacre of the Innocents, this work shows him to be a giant of a man who has many claims to greatness: as the protector of his people, as a soldier and diplomat and as a builder of cities throughout Palestine and the Temple at Jerusalem.

Book Description
This extraordinary book explores the personal history of Herod the Great. It considers Herod's life in the context of his relationship with the Jewish people and the Gospel account of Jesus Christ. A "great" man, Herod was a political genius who quickly turned the worst of situations into the greatest of opportunities. He rose above every situation that challenged him, even at his darkest hour. Nevertheless, Herod was beset with significant character flaws. His lust for power overwhelmed his sense of morality. Herod the Great measures the true nature of "greatness" upon the human psyche.

Book Description
*Includes pictures *Includes Gospel accounts of the history *Includes online resources and a bibliography for further reading *Includes a table of contents Herod is one of the more well-known characters of the Bible, as even those with a limited knowledge of the Bible will recognize the name and maybe have some idea of who Herod was. One of the most popular stories, known even to non-Christians, is "Herod's slaying of the Innocents," a gruesome part of the Christmas story. Others who may know a little bit more about the Bible will know of the accounts of Herod and John the Baptist, Herod and Jesus, Herod who was eaten by worms and maybe even Herod and Paul. Although Herod doesn't appear in the Bible very often, it is at critical junctures in New Testament history that readers come across the name, and a casual reader of the Bible might incorrectly assume that each time the name "Herod" is mentioned, the Bible is referring to the same person. In fact, there were actually six different people in the New Testament who were part of this dynasty of "Herods." From before the birth of Christ until the destruction of Jerusalem, the Herodian Dynasty was the ruling family in Palestine. The family of Herod came from Idumea, so they were considered by some Jews to not be qualified to sit on the throne of David in Jerusalem. However, the close connections of the family with the current Roman emperors and those who were to become emperors kept them in power for almost 100 years. The dynasty started with a celebrated war hero and ended with strong rumors of an incestuous relationship between brother and sister. The power struggles among the aristocracy and the discontent of the populace also characterized the political scene behind the events of New Testament Palestine. The Kingdom of Herod the Great: The History of the Herodian Dynasty in Ancient Israel During the Life of Jesus looks at the life and dynasty of the Judean client king through both Scripture and historical analysis. Along with pictures and a bibliography, you will learn about Herod the Great's dynasty like never before, in no time at all.

Book Description
Herod the Great is a person of mystery. In an awful act of violence, he ordered the murder of the children in Bethlehem in an attempt to eliminate the child Jesus. This act of violence would characterize a life that used its power for many evil purposes. Yet Herod the Great was also brilliant, courageous, handsome, athletic, and charming. Particularly in his youth, he was a force to be reckoned with who won his kingdom by the strength of his courage and will. Herod will also live in one of the most interesting times in the history of the ancient world. He will personally know Julius Caesar, Mark Antony, and Caesar Augustus. He will be seduced by the famous Cleopatra but the one of the few who resisted her advances. His enemies said of him, "He stole the throne like a fox, ruled like a tiger, and died like a dog." Whatever else we can say about the life of Herod the Great, it was absolutely fascinating. It is this remarkable life that we explore in this book.

Book Description
The traditional date of 4 BCE for Herod's death, as set forth by E. Schurer (1896), has been accepted by historians for years without notable controversy. However, according to the texts of Luke and Matthew, Herod died shortly after Jesus' birth, which can be fixed in 2 BCE. Consequently, there is apparently a major chronological contradiction, however Josephus gives a dozen synchronisms that enable us to date his death on 26 January 1 BCE just after a total lunar eclipse (9 January 1 BCE) prior to the Passover. Two important events confirm the dating of Herod's death: the 'census of Quirinius' in Syria which was a part of the 'Inventory of the world' ordered by Augustus when he became 'Father of the Country' in 2 BCE and the 'war of Varus' after Herod's death conducted under the auspices of Caius Caesar, the imperial legate of the East, and dated during the year of his consulship in 1 CE."
