John Clowes, by 'John Isaac Hawkins, 1819.' This is the same date as that of the portrait by Allen, and Flaxman's tablet. The church has had but two rectors during the long term of 105 years! The present rector, the Eev. John Henn, has lately succeeded the Eev. W. Huntington, who was curate to Mr. Clowes after his retirement to Warwick, and succeeded him as Eector, in 1831. Mr. Henn has kindly favoured me with the following particulars, given him by Mr. Huntington's daughter, concerning the ancient coloured window in the church, representing the Saviour's entry into Jerusalem: --'Mr. Clowes was most kind to a French refugee priest, who took shelter in England during the Eevolution of '93. I have understood from papa that this priest stayed for months with Mr. Clowes, and that a sincere friendship was formed between them. When peace was restored, and the Roman Catholic priest was able to return to his charge in or near Eouen (I think it was in Rouen), he had to superintend the work of restoring his own church, which was a very old one. In the restoration there was a window which could be spared, representing the entry of Our Lord into Jerusalem, and the priest thought he could not testify his gratitude to Mr. Clowes better or more acceptably than by carefully sending him, as a present to his beloved church, this really old glass. I do not at all know its date: probably a connoisseur could accurately say. I believe it was received with great rejoicing, and though it was not very well put in, it seems an interesting relic of the past, and a visible proof of " church union." 'The North...

Questions have been raised in recent decades about the place of women in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, in church and society during a time of vast industrial change. These topics are broad, but can be seen in microcosm in one small area of the English Midlands: the parish of Madeley, Shropshire, in which Coalbrookdale became synonymous with the industrial age. Here, the evangelical Methodist clergyman John Fletcher (1729-1785) ministered between 1760 and 1785, among a population including Roman Catholics and Quakers, as well as people indifferent to religion. For nearly sixty years after his death, two women, Fletcher's widow and later her protege, had virtual charge of the parish, which became one of the last examples of Methodism within the Church of England. Through examining this specific locality, with its potential for religious tension and great social significance, this multidisciplinary collection of essays engages with developing areas of research. The French Revolution generated a wave of popular piety and religious excitement in both France and England, where millenarians—prophets of the millennium—attempted to interpret the Revolution as the fulfillment of the predictions of Daniel and St. John the Divine. This study discusses the millenarian ideal in the context of the intellectual and religious attitudes of the time. Rejecting interpretations of millenarianism that chalk it up to class struggle or mass hysteria, Garrett stresses the interaction between politics and religion, viewing the phenomenon as the interpretation, by a varied assortment of individuals, of coincident political events in eschatological terms. Faced with a change as significant as the French Revolution, people found in the prophetic books of the Bible an understanding of what was happening to them. If the Revolution was God's will, if its development had been foretold, then surely the final outcome would be beneficial, at least for the faithful. Political events became eschatological events, and dangers and misfortunes became simply the chastisements that a fallen world must undergo before the Second Coming of Jesus Christ can redeem it. Although some of the beliefs may now seem bizarre, Garrett shows that, at the time, they attracted many followers for whom these ideas were both reasonable and respectable. Focusing on the careers of three millenarians—Suzette Labrousse, Catherine Théot, and Richard Brothers—Garrett tries to understand these prophets as persons rather than dismiss them as fanatics. Their prominence resulted from their success in transmitting a new political consciousness through familiar religious imagery. While the Revolution gave urgency and tangible reality to millenarian convictions, Labrousse, Théot, and others were convinced, well before the Revolution, that they were the bearers of divine revelations and thus welcomed the Revolution as confirmation of their own missions.
