Book Description
Excerpt from The Life and Adventures of Henry Smith, the Celebrated Razor Strop Man: Embracing a Complete Collection of His Original Songs, Queer Speeches, Humorous Letters, and Odd, Droll, Strange and Whimsical, Savings, Now Published for the First Time As he reads the following pages, let him ask himself if he is safe, when one as strong and confident as himself, perhaps, was found to be perfect weakness. If he is already so far advanced in habits of intemperance as to despair of reformation, let him take courage, for one as bad as he has been saved, was dead and is alive again. The collection of Mr. Smith's poetry, speeches, letters, &c., which we have appended to this work, will serve to while away an idle hour, if they subserve no better purpose. If the people read these comical and truly original effusions with half the interest they have exhibited in listening to them, as they fell from the lips of their author, the publisher will be more than satisfied with his speculation. Trusting that none will be injured, while we hope that some may be benefitted by a perusal of this unpretending volume, we send it forth to the world, as one of the very smallest aspirants to public favor and patronage. A Player and a Gentleman

A Player and a Gentleman PDF Author: Amy E. Hughes
Publisher: University of Michigan Press
ISBN: 047290261X
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 353

Book Description
Hardworking actor, playwright, and stage manager Harry Watkins (1825–94) was also a prolific diarist. For fifteen years Watkins regularly recorded the plays he saw, the roles he performed, the books he read, and his impressions of current events. Performing across the U.S., Watkins collaborated with preeminent performers and producers, recording his successes and failures as well as his encounters with celebrities such as P. T. Barnum, Junius Brutus Booth, Edwin Forrest, Anna Cora Mowatt, and Lucy Stone. His is the only known diary of substantial length and scope written by a U.S. actor before the Civil War—making Watkins, essentially, the antebellum equivalent of Samuel Pepys. Theater historians Amy E. Hughes and Naomi J. Stubbs have selected, edited, and annotated excerpts from the diary in an edition that offers a vivid glimpse of how ordinary people like Watkins lived, loved, struggled, and triumphed during one of the most tumultuous periods in U.S. history. The selections in A Player and a Gentleman are drawn from a more expansive digital archive of the complete diary. The book, like its digital counterpart, will richly enhance our knowledge of antebellum theater culture and daily life in the U.S. during this period.

Book Description
At the end of his weekly news-in-review program, Moore on Sunday beloved WCCO-TV newsanchor Dave Moore often signed off by reciting a poem. These poems, composed by Moore's son Peter and collected here for the first time, offer a fresh and funny take on the common and not-so-common stuff of our everyday lives. Reminiscent of Ogden Nash and Tom Lehrer, with a dash of Dr. Seuss, Peter Moore's verse captures the essence of his father's wit, common sense, honesty, and warmth.
