Book Description
Based on the acclaimed reference Lichens of North America, this resource for the classroom, field, and laboratory presents updated and expanded keys for the identification of over 2,000 species of lichens indigenous to the continent, twice the number covered by previous keys. The book includes a glossary illustrated with photographs by Sylvia Duran Sharnoff and Stephen Sharnoff and drawings by Susan Laurie-Bourque, all from the original book. The revised keys are an indispensable identification tool for botanists, students, scientists, and enthusiasts alike.--COVER.

The Lichens of Great Britain and Ireland

The Lichens of Great Britain and Ireland PDF Author: Clifford W. Smith
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Lichens
Languages : en
Pages : 1064

Book Description
"The Lichen Flora of Great Britain and Ireland published in 1992 was an outstanding achievement for British Lichenology. It was a pioneering work and the first of its type in Europe. This much enlarged revision reflects the considerable accumulation of new information that has occurred since the publication of the first edition and is symptomatic of the enormous advances in lichen taxonomy over the last two decades. There are keys to 327 genera and 1873 species, which is an increase of 386 species since it was first published. The publication provides detailed information on morphology, chemistry and distribution for each species written in language that is readily accessible, avoiding obscure terminology. Both the glossary and introductory sections have been expanded and the latter includes helpful advice on the identification and examination of lichens. The preparation of this new treatment has involved a large number of contributors both in the UK and overseas and represents the culmination of lichen studies at this time. This book is undoubtedly the standard work for the identification of lichens in Great Britain and Ireland and will be indispensable to all serious students of British, Irish and overseas lichenology and other biologists working in related fields of ecology, pollution, chemical and environmental studies."--Publisher's description.

Life at Rock Surfaces

Life at Rock Surfaces PDF Author: Burkhard Büdel
Publisher: Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG
ISBN: 3110646463
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 258

Book Description
Rock surfaces provide a challenging habitat for a broad diversity of micro- or small-sized organisms. They interact with each other forming complex communities as well with their substrate causing biodeterioration of rock. Extreme fluctuation in light, temperature and hydration are the main factors that determine the rock surface habitats. The habitat includes epilithic organisms which thrive on the surface without penetrating the rock, endolithic organisms which live just beneath the surface using a thin layer of the rock surface for protection against adverse conditions of the environment (e.g. light protection, storage of water) and chasmo-endolithic organisms which use fractures of the rock surface for a more habitable environment. The book will provide an overview of the various organismal groups, from prokaryotes to vascular plants and arthropods, as well as survey organism-mediated interactions with the rock surface. The latter include biogenic weathering (biogeochemistry, state-of-the art imaging methods), photosynthesis and nitrogen fixation at and inside the rock surface.

Atlas of Pyrenulaceae and Trypetheliaceae Vol 3

Atlas of Pyrenulaceae and Trypetheliaceae Vol 3 PDF Author: Felix Schumm
Publisher: BoD – Books on Demand
ISBN: 3755763354
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 526

Book Description
This book focuses on two families of lichenized ascomycetes: Pyrenulaceae and Trypetheliaceae. It illustrated the majority of the accepted species in these families, which are most diverse on bark in tropical regions, most especially the Amazon. Fully updated dichotomous identification keys are given to all species in these families and to some similar groups and species, especially those in the same habitat, several of which are also illustrated in full. The illustrations are made from relatively recent material which still shows all characters, including gelatinous ascopore sheaths. For relatively recently described species, often type material is illustrated.

Biogeography and Ecology of the Rain Forests of Eastern Africa

Biogeography and Ecology of the Rain Forests of Eastern Africa PDF Author: Jon C. Lovett
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 9780521068987
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
Eastern African rain forests are remarkable in their high level of endemism. Miocene uplift of the central African plateau separated these montane and coastal forests from the main Guineo-Congolian forest of west and central Africa. Since then, stable Indian Ocean temperatures maintained a region of high rainfall throughout Pleistocene droughts that devastated forest elsewhere on the continent. Relics of the former Pan-African rain forest survived here, the study of which provides a unique insight into tropical evolutionary processes. This book brings together research on the animals, plants and geography of this intriguing residual forest, and highlights the need for effective management practices to conserve its exceptional biodiversity in the face of increasing pressure for land for cultivation.
