Book Description
Excerpt from The Library of Original Sources, Vol. 6 Whether or not the heart, besides propelling the blood, giving it motion locally, and distributing it to the body, adds anything else to it, - heat, spirit, perfection, - must be inquired into by and by, and decided upon other grounds. SO much may sumec at this time, when it is shown that by the action Of the heart the blood is trans fused through the ventricles from the veins to the arteries, and dis tributed by them to all parts Of the body. So much, indeed, is admitted by all [physiologists] both from the structure of the heart and the arrangement and action of its valves. But still they are like persons purblind or groping about in the dark; and then they give utterance to diverse, contradictory, and incoherent sentiments, delivering many things upon conjecture, as we have already had occasion to remark. Book Description
Excerpt from The Library of Original Sources Of all the islands and continents that I Should discover and gain, and that I might hereafter discover and gain in the Ocean Sea, and that my eldest son should succeed, and so on from generation to genera tion for ever. I left the city of Granada on the 12th day of May, in the same year Of 1492, being Saturday, and came to the town Of Palos, which is a support; where I equipped three vessels, well suited for such serv ice; and departed from that port, well supplied with provisions and with many sailors, on the 3d day of August of the same year, being Friday, half an hour before sunrise, taking the route to the islands of Canaria, belonging to your Highnesses, which are in the said Ocean Sea, that I might thence take my departure for navigating until I should arrive at the Indies, and give the letters Of your Highnesses to those princes, so as to comply with my orders. As part of my duty I thought it well to write an account Of all the voyage very punctually, noting from day to day all that I Should do and see, and that should happen, as will be seen further on. Also, Lords Princes, I resolved to describe each night what passed in the day, and to note each day how I navigated at night. I propose to construct a new chart for navigating, on which I shall delineate all the sea and lands of the Ocean in their proper positions under their bearings; and further, I propose to prepare a book, and to put down all as it were in a picture, by latitude from the equator, and western longitude. Above all, I shall have accomplished much, for I shall forget Sleep, and shall work at the business Of navigation, that so the service may be performed; all which will entail great labour. Book Description
Excerpt from The Library of Original Sources, Vol. 10: Ideas That Have Influenced Civilization The weapons with which the bourgeoisie felled feudalism to the ground are now turned against the bourgeoisie itself. But not only has the bourgeoisie forged the weapons that bring death to itself; it has also called into existence the men who are to wield those weapons - the modern working class - the proletarians. In proportion as the bourgeoisie, i. Capital, is developed, in the same proportion is the proletariat, the modern working class, developed; a class of laborers who live only so long as they find work, and who find work only so long as their labor increases capital, - These laborers, who./ must sell themselves piecemeal, are a commodity. Like every other article of commerce, and are consequently exposed to all the vicissitudes of competition, to all the fluctuations of the market. Book Description
Excerpt from Ancient Metrical Tales: Printed Chiefly From Original Sources The present Volume is sent forth in a smaller size than that in which its Editor originally intended it should appear. It was commenced during a residence in the University, and purposed for enlargement as future opportunities might occur. But as nearly four years have now elapsed since the transcripts were first made, and as there appears every probability of a still longer delay if the Editor's earlier plans are adhered to, he has thought it prudent to abandon them, and commit it to the press in its present state. A Source Book of Greek History (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Fred Morrow Fling
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9780364502464
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 416

Book Description
Excerpt from A Source Book of Greek History Among the more difficult questions are those touching the relationship of the sources. I have given a few examples of this kind, quoting from three sources, at times, that the pupil may have a chance to see that they often draw from one another, and that it is only by the agreement of independent sources that the truth is determined. One of the main purposes of this critical work is to make the pupil comprehend the uncertainty and unreliability of much of our information upon Greek history, and that this is due to the character of the evidence with which we are obliged to work. A further purpose is to bring out the idea that in history the only authority is the source, and that the writer of a historical narrative cannot take refuge behind the dogma of infallibility, but must prove all that he asserts by the citation of evidence. This was often as much a matter of surprise to the owners of other libraries as to the community at large, and is probably to be accounted for on the ground that the collee. Book Description
Excerpt from Catalogue of the Public Library of Brookline HE Library, represented in the following catalogue, is believed to have been the first instituted under the general statute, authorizing towns and cities to raise and appropriate money for founding and maintaining public libraries. It was established by a vote of the town, March 30, 1857. The sum of 8934 - being for each ratable poll of the preceding year was appropriated for its foundation; and an additional sum of 8233 being 25 cents for each ratable poll was voted for its maintenance and increase during the then current year. These were the extreme sums which could be legally raised by taxation for the purpose. A suitable place having been provided, the Library was opened to the public, Dec. 2, 1857. It then contained 900 volumes. Liberal appropriations by the town, and generous gifts from private sources, year by year, increased the number of books; and when, in 1869, the present commodious building was completed, at a cost of with shelving for volumes, were placed in the alcoves.
