George Moore and the Autogenous Self

George Moore and the Autogenous Self PDF Author: Elizabeth Grubgeld
Publisher: Syracuse University Press
ISBN: 9780815626152
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 314

Book Description
Moore's work exhibits a profound recognition of the forces of heredity, gender, culture, and history while simultaneously declaring his belief in an autogenous self. In early novels like A Drama in Muslin and Esther Waters, there is a notable conflict between his postulation of the pure, instinctive individual and the emphasis upon the shaping power of heredity and economics inherent in the traditions of social realism that he adopts. In The Untilled Field, The Lake, and later works, Moore perfects a narrative technique that in highlighting the power of subjective memory, allows his characters to work out a new relation with the forces of history.

English Drama of the Early Modern Period 1890-1940

English Drama of the Early Modern Period 1890-1940 PDF Author: Jean Chothia
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1315504200
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 351

Book Description
The period 1890-1940 was a particularly rich and influential phase in the development of modern English theatre: the age of Wilde and Shaw and a generation of influential actors and managers from Irving and Terry to Guilgud and Olivier. Jean Chothia's study is in two parts beginning with a portrait of the period, setting the narrative context and considering the dramatic social and cultural changes at work during this time. It then focuses on some of the main themes in the theatre, from Shaw and comedy, to the rise of political and radio drama, providing an interpretative framework for the period. This volume will be of great benefit to students and academics of English literature and drama, as it covers the work of the major dramatists of the period as well as considering the dramatic output of literary figures, such as James, Eliot and Lawrence.

Theater Figures

Theater Figures PDF Author: Emily Allen
Publisher: Ohio State University Press
ISBN: 9780814209318
Category : Actors in literature
Languages : en
Pages : 270

Book Description
Why did nineteenth-century novels return, over again, to the scene of theater? Emily Allen argues that theater provided nineteenth-century novels, novelists, and critics with a generic figure that allowed them to position particular novels and novelistic genres within a complex literary field. Novel genres high and low, male and female, public and private, realistic and romantic, all came to identify themselves within a set of coordinates that included--if only for the purpose of exclusion--the spectacular figure of theater. This figure likewise provided a trope around and against which to construct images of readers and authors, images that most frequently worked to mediate between the supposedly private acts of reading and writing and the very public facts of the print market. In readings of novels by Burney, Austen, Scott, Dickens, Jewsbury, Flaubert, Braddon, and Moore, Allen shows how frequently theater appears as figure in novels of the nineteenth century, and how theater figures--actively and importantly--in what we have come to look back on as the history of the nineteenth-century novel. "Theater Figures thus offers a new model for thinking about how theater helped produce changes in the nineteenth-century literary market. While previous critics have considered theater as an enabling foil for the novel--either a constitutive opposite or constructive ally--Allen demonstrates how theater figures and tropes were used to negotiate competition among the novels and novelists eagerly seeking their share of the literary limelight.

Book Description
This bibliography is the second revised edition of a book first published in 1978 under a somewhat different title. Apart from correcting mistakes, the second edition extends the coverage of material until 1986 and includes many items from 1987 and 1988. It also adds numerous items that should have been included in the first edition but had somehow escaped my notice.
