Forging Democracy

Forging Democracy PDF Author: Geoff Eley
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 9780198021407
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 724

Book Description
Democracy in Europe has been a recent phenomenon. Only in the wake of World War II were democratic frameworks secured, and, even then, it was decades before democracy truly blanketed the continent. Neither given nor granted, democracy requires conflict, often violent confrontations, and challenges to the established political order. In Europe, Geoff Eley convincingly shows, democracy did not evolve organically out of a natural consensus, the achievement of prosperity, or the negative cement of the Cold War. Rather, it was painstakingly crafted, continually expanded, and doggedly defended by varying constellations of socialist, feminist, Communist, and other radical movements that originally blossomed in the later nineteenth century. Parties of the Left championed democracy in the revolutionary crisis after World War I, salvaged it against the threat of fascism, and renewed its growth after 1945. They organized civil societies rooted in egalitarian ideals which came to form the very fiber of Europe's current democratic traditions. The trajectories of European democracy and the history of the European Left are thus inextricably bound together. Geoff Eley has given us the first truly comprehensive history of the European Left--its successes and failures; its high watermarks and its low tides; its accomplishments, insufficiencies, and excesses; and, most importantly, its formative, lasting influence on the European political landscape. At a time when the Left's influence and legitimacy are frequently called into question, Forging Democracy passionately upholds its vital contribution.

Modern Europe, 1789-1914

Modern Europe, 1789-1914 PDF Author: Sydney Herbert
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9781330250846
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 284

Book Description
Excerpt from Modern Europe, 1789-1914 The object of this book is to describe the main lines of development pursued in European politics since the beginning of the French Revolution in 1789. To do this on a really adequate scale would require a work of immensely greater dimensions, and I have attempted no more than an introductory sketch. One result of the Great War has been that a very large number of people is seeking, for the first time, seriously to understand what are called "foreign affairs," the relations in which England stands to other States, and the causes which have helped to produce the present world-convulsion. It is a commonplace that the causes which bring states to hostility or friendship can only be understood when something is known of their respective histories, of the manner of their growth, and of the forces which have conditioned that growth. I have tried, therefore, to produce a book which will assist such students as I have described to gain a foundation of knowledge upon which they can build by further studies. The modesty of my purpose has conditioned the method pursued in writing the book. I have consistently endeavoured to show how the internal histories of the European States have affected their external relations, and how these in turn have influenced domestic development. Europe 1789-1920

Europe 1789-1920 PDF Author: Edward Raymond Turner
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9781330250525
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 757

Book Description
Excerpt from Europe 1789-1920 The author has attempted to write an account of Europe since the French Revolution. The past few years have added much and brought considerable alteration in perspective. To people now living the epoch since 1789 is the most important and interesting in the history of mankind. It began with a revolution whose effects are not yet all measured; it ended with another whose consequences can scarcely yet even be guessed at. It was ushered in and completed by devastating wars which altered and may alter Europe for many generations. It was a period of mournful failures and mistakes, but it witnessed more progress than any epoch preceding. It was a period when for the first time the mass of the people got education, and some political power - which still they are learning to use. In the latter part of the period, amidst the infinite complexity of modern life, there was slowly unfolded a mighty sequence of things, ever more ominous and dreadful, like the prologue to some ancient tragedy, or music which forebodes doom approaching, until at last a catastrophe came which threatened to engulf civilization. As this book begins at the end of an old era, so it concludes with the ending of an era which already begins to seem old. The work has been partly a labor of love, based on studies undertaken for their own sake, then elaborated in the teaching of some years. My obligations to others are numerous and very great; but not a few of the conclusions are based upon study and observation in Europe. A Brief History of Europe

A Brief History of Europe PDF Author: Lucius Hudson Holt
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9781330250341
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 442

Book Description
Excerpt from A Brief History of Europe: From 1789 to 1815 This history has been written in the endeavor to present in brief compass the story of the French Revolution and the Napoleonic period in proper perspective against the background of general European conditions. In the account of the Revolution, the authors have attempted to give a fair and impartial estimate of causes and incidents, and to show the reaction of the other states of Europe against events in France. In the account of the Napoleonic period, they have tried, so far as space permitted, to keep before the reader the general European conditions as these affected, and as they were affected by, the policies of the great Emperor. A feature of special importance is the unusually complete presentation of the more important military operations of the period. Without going into technical details the authors have striven to give an accurate and readable account of the strategy and maneuvers by which the campaigns were won or lost. In the division of work, the authors have followed respectively the lines laid down in their previous book, European History, 1862-1914. The Professor of English and History has undertaken the outline of the political history: the Assistant Professor that of the military campaigns. The authors gratefully acknowledge the assistance rendered by Captain William Kelly Harrison, Jr., in drawing the maps for use in the study of the campaigns, and by Major Charles A. King, Jr., in reading the book in manuscript and offering many valuable suggestions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
