Book Description
Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 84: November 9, 1922 President Grant said it was a source of great satisfaction to him to see such a large attendance. He said he had no recollection of any opening of conference on a week day when some of those attending had to stand. He was grateful to see so many present, hoped all would be fed on the bread of life, and that whatever he said would be for the good of himself and the congregation. When the Opening prayer was made, he said, and a supplication went up to God that law and order might be upheld, he knew what the keynote should be. President Grant then read a selection from the Doctrine and Covenants to the effect that laws and rulers should be upheld and order maintained. That, he said, meant that men should be able to labor without running the risk of being killed by someone who objects to their doing such work. The President said he was convinced beyond the shadow of a doubt that it is the duty of every Latter-day Saint to obey the law, to uphold the law and sustain the law. It is the duty of every man and woman in the Church to uphold the laws. This includes the prohibition law and the cigarette law. President Grant said that only those men who will agree to support the cigarette law and keep it on the statute books should be supported by the Latter-day Saints. The founder of this Church met the Father and the Son face to face, and his followers have been proclaiming that fact to the world since, said the President. He then read an account of the martyrdom of the Prophet Joseph Smith and his brother Hyrum; how the Prophet declared he was going like a lamb to the slaughter. The speaker said his mother had told him that a more God-fearing man than Hyrum Smith never lived. He declared he believes that Joseph and Hyrum are working on the other side for the advancement of the plan of salvation as they worked here, and that they have attained the highest degree of exaltation. Men can conspire and can work against the Church of God as established upon the earth, the speaker said, but no one can find a man since Jesus Christ who has done more for the salvation of mankind than Joseph Smith. Hundreds of thousands of persons, he said, have a testimony of the truth of this fact, and all the lies in the world cannot stop this work. Smith, Journal of Discourses, Vol. 19, page That expresses in one sentence all the effects produced by baptism when performed by the authority of our Lord, and in the manner He has ordained. If We consider the teachings of the Scriptures with regard to the true meaning of baptism, we can, to some extent, comprehend why it is a condition of salvation and a means of regeneration. Baptism is a confession of Christ. By that ordinance the believer confesses before God, men, and angels that he has enlisted in the Lord's army and is willing to follow Him. The Lord says: Who soever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven (matt. 10: When we ask 'for baptism we confess that we believe in Jesus Christ as our Mediator, our King, and the Captain of our salvation, and we have this assurance: If thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thy heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved (romans 10: 9; compare Doe. And Gov. 76: To be baptized is, therefore, as most churches teach, a sacred duty. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 95: November 9, 1933 Precedent, a century Old, that found its beginning in a revela tion from God to the Prophet Joseph Smith at the organization Of the Church, has made conferences an established institution in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The great general semi-annual gatherings, and the mission and district gatherings as well, are as mileposts in the glorious journey of Church achievement and growth in this dispensation. Believers gather to receive instruction from their leaders, to renew Old friendships, to refresh their loyalty, to enlarge their under standing, to grow in the faith - and to thrill to the strength of fellowship that permeates the assembled saints, united by the same fraternal bond. Indeed, the secret of the great internal strength Of the Church lies, in part, in the great unifying power of such gatherings. Book Description
Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 85: May 10, 1923 Disaster has come to many members of the Church, he said. Because they failed to heed the counsel to stay out of debt. Some have lost their homes by reason of debt, and have been obliged to move to other climes; and this in some instances has resulted and might yet result in their drifting away from the Church. He said he can find no financial adviser who is willing to predict safety beyond the very near future, and to-day is as good a time as ever to heed the ad vice. It occurs to him that one debt the Latter-day Saints owe is their debt to the Lord, and he admonished the saints to be prompt and fair in the payment of their tithes in the season thereof. The next Speaker called was President Charles A. Callis of the Southern States mission. It is good to live to-day, he said. There have always been those who garnish the sepulchres of the dead prophets, the speaker pointed out, but he believes that if a man is disloyal to the Church leaders to-day he would have been disloyal to the Prophet Joseph Smith if a man is disloyal to the government of the United States to-day he would have been disloyal to George Washington and the other patriots of his day. He told of a conversation he had had with a learned man who said that if the world had been told ten years ago that the great world war was coming it would have laughed the informer to scorn and then would have crucified him. Elder Callis said he told the man that in effect the world did crucify such a man, for the Prophet Joseph Smith foretold the great Civil war and died a martyr to his convictions. It is the call of Latter-day Saints to cry repentance to the world and to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ, of whom Latter-day Saints are not ashamed. Book Description
Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 83: June 23, 1921 I want my friends to know that the doctrines of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints declare that God inspires men. We heard Elder Whitney read to us the twenty-ninth chapter of Alma. When I was the junior member of the Council of the Twelve Apostles, I knew that chapter off by heart, and I used to repeat it, time and time again, in my public addresses.
