Economic Growth in Prewar China

Economic Growth in Prewar China PDF Author: Thomas G. Rawski
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 496

Book Description
"A landmark study that will stimulate a major rethinking of the character of Chinese society in the first half of the twentieth century. It challenges persuasively so much of the conventional wisdom concerning the nature of China's economy prior to 1949 that it will almost certainly become one of the most widely quoted studies of Chinese economic growth in the twentieth century."--Nicholas R. Lardy, University of Washington "Rawski's book offers the first comprehensive synthesis of early twentieth-century Chinese history based on original research from an economist's point of view. It directly and aggressively challenges major propositions espoused by leading historians and provides alternatives to these standard interpretations."--Sherman Cochran, Cornell University

Economy of the Chinese Mainland

Economy of the Chinese Mainland PDF Author: Ta-chung Liu
Publisher: Princeton University Press
ISBN: 1400877261
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 790

Book Description
A picture of a relentless drive for industrialization at the expense of living standards is presented in this authoritative comparison of the economic development of China in the Communist and pre-Communist periods. The authors have made a quantitative analysis of the economy of the Chinese mainland from 1952 to 1959 and related it to accounts for 1933. Their interpretation differs dramatically from official Communist statements; and their findings cast serious doubt on Communist claims for annual increases in national income. For 1958, for instance, the official figure for the rate of increase was 34 per cent, but the true rate was probably nearer to 14 per cent. Originally published in 1965. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions.
