Book Description
It is 1961 and there is reason for hope. The United States is being led by its youngest president. Korea seems nearly forgotten. Only a few people have heard about Vietnam, which, for America, is still officially some years away. There is peace in the air. It is a great time to join the Army. Or is it? The Last of the Short MPs is the story of an eighteen-year-old immigrant from Canada who joins the U.S. Army to be in the military police and to become a man. At five-foot-seven, Ray Holland enlists three days before the MP height requirement is raised to five-foot-nine, thus earning him the title of the book. He meets up with Military Police Staff Sergeant Richard King, or King Richard as he is known by the troops. King is a large, angry and unforgiving man who believes that size commands respect. His reasons for wanting to get rid of Holland go beyond height and add fuel to the fires burning within the sergeant and his new recruit. Each is determined to succeed. Something has to give. Take a humorous and raw look inside the Military Police Corps as seen by a short MP.

Real House Lives
Author: Michael Morden et al.
Publisher: FriesenPress
ISBN: 1525564323
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 95
Book Description
“We’re not just in a sort of post-truth politics, but we’re in a post-democratic politics.” – Former Member of Parliament Democracy’s future has become uncertain. Politicians are viewed with deep cynicism. Political parties have lost touch with mass society. Citizens’ expectations of what their democracy should do have outstripped what their institutions can provide. All of this is feeding a wave of polarization, populism, and anxiety around the world, with Canadians much more likely to say their democracy is becoming weaker rather than stronger. Real House Lives uses the stories and experiences of former parliamentarians to understand what’s going wrong with our national politics, and to put forward a vision of democratic representation that is independent, thoughtful, engaged, and empowered. It follows MPs through their lives and work, exploring how this vision of political leadership can be realized through a stronger Parliament, better local democratic engagement, and healthier parties. This may be an ambitious view, but Canadian democracy requires ambition, especially in a public climate of increasing partisanship, cynicism, and distrust. This book is for anyone who has ever imagined offering their career and life to public service. It’s a how-to guide, an inspirational account, and perhaps a warning.

In vivo Cell Biology of Cerebral Cortical Development and Its Related Neurological Disorders: Cellular Insights into Neurogenesis and Neuronal Migration
Author: Takeshi Kawauchi
Publisher: Frontiers Media SA
ISBN: 2889199622
Category : Neurosciences. Biological psychiatry. Neuropsychiatry
Languages : en
Pages : 270
Book Description
The brain consists of a complex but precisely organized neural network, which provides the structural basis of higher order functions. Such a complex structure originates from a simple pseudostratified neuroepithelium. During the developing mammalian cerebral cortex, a cohort of neural progenitors, located near the ventricle, differentiates into neurons and exhibits multi-step modes of migration toward the pial surface. Tight regulation of neurogenesis and neuronal migration is essential for the determination of the neuron number in adult brains and the proper positioning of excitatory and inhibitory neurons in a specific layer, respectively. In addition, defects in neurogenesis and neuronal migration can cause several neurological disorders, such as microcephaly, periventricular heterotopia and lissencephaly. Recent advances in genetic approaches to study the developing cerebral cortex, as well as the use of a number of novel techniques, particularly in vivo electroporation and time-lapse analyses using explant slice cultures, have significantly increased our understanding of cortical development. These novel techniques have allowed for cell biological analyses of cerebral cortical development in vivo or ex vivo, showing that many cellular events, including endocytosis, cell adhesion, microtubule and actin cytoskeletal regulation, neurotransmitter release, stress response, the consequence of cellular crowding (physical force), dynamics of transcription factors, midbody release and polarity transition are required for neurogenesis and/or neuronal migration. The aim of this research topic is to highlight molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying cerebral cortical development and its related neurological disorders from the cell biological point of views, such as cell division, cell-cycle regulation, cytoskeletal organization, cell adhesion and membrane trafficking. The topic has been organized into three chapters: 1) neurogenesis and cell fate determination, 2) neuronal migration and 3) cortical development-related neurological disorders. We hope that the results and discussions contributed by all authors in this research topic will be broadly useful for further advances in basic research, as well as improvements in the etiology and care of patients suffering from neurological and psychiatric disorders.
