Intimate Memoirs of Napoleon III, Vol. 1 of 2 PDF Author: Baron D'Ambes

ISBN: 9781331781585
Category : Biography & Autobiography

Book Description
Excerpt from Intimate Memoirs of Napoleon III, Vol. 1 of 2: Personal Reminiscences of the Man and the Emperor The book here presented to the English public is the private diary of a lifelong and intimate friend of Napoleon III. The Baron d'Ambes, as the diarist chooses to call himself, first made the acquaintance of the future Emperor when scarcely more than a boy at Arenaberg, the Swiss home where he and his mother, Queen Hortense of Holland, were living in exile. Deeply impressed with the personality of Louis Napoleon, he began from the date of his earliest association with his hero jotting down incidents, conversations and reflections as they occurred - a habit he maintained to the end of a long life. To these he added evidence from every source bearing on his subject - letters, documents, newspaper cuttings, which, after the Emperor's death and within a few years of his own, he sorted and prepared for publication. The book therefore supplies an enormous mass of first-hand material for a survey and study of the life and character of one of the most enigmatic figures in modern history. The Baron follows his hero from boyhood through the years of exile and adventure - as a conspirator in Italy, as a prisoner at Ham, as a refugee in London, as President of the Republic of 1848, finally as Emperor, down to the disasters of 1870, the fatal day of Sedan and the death at Chislehurst. Book Description
Excerpt from The Fall of Napoleon, Vol. 2: An Historical Memoir But though Napoleon's power was still superior to all external enemies, he found that in the very centre of his dominions his throne was raised on a foundation of sand. The account of Malet's conspiracy reached him on the retreat from Moscow, 'and had no doubt hastened his departure for Paris; for the strange event proved how slight was the hold which the new dynasty had taken on the affections of the people. In Napoleon's Shadow

In Napoleon's Shadow PDF Author: Louis-Joseph Marchand
Publisher: Casemate Publishers
ISBN: 1784382906
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 556

Book Description
In 1811, twelve young men were chosen among the families in the Emperors personal service to serve as ushers in his apartments. My mother, attached to the household of the King of Rome as first nurse to the prince, requested this favour for me from the grand chamberlain, the Count de Montesquiou, and it was granted.Louis-Joseph Marchands intimate memoir of his time as Napoleons valet is the last of the significant Napoleonic manuscripts to be translated into English and a unique and precious insight into the last days of Napoleons Imperial project.Serving alongside the Emperor from the apex of his reign and through his eventual demise, Marchand depicts, in remarkable detail, the Russian campaign, the campaigns of Germany and France, Napoleons exile to Elba and subsequent escape, his defeat at Waterloo.Friend and confidante to the leader, Marchand was beside him at the Tuileries during the Hundred Days, and he was present to hear Napoleons last words, France my son the army on the island of St Helena. This sincere and authentic testimony from a man with nothing to hide, nothing to apologise for is both a meticulous historical record and a fresh personal perspective on Napoleon. In this work, Tulard remarks in his preface, the Emperor speaks freely. Listen..Marchand presents the somewhat familiar history of the Emperor's decline as completely new territory through conversations, fond stories and personal encounters'.'Marchand's memoirs, republished in English for the first time in two decades, represent a truly irreplaceable contribution to Napoleonic scholarship. Beyond the Emperor as commander and conqueror, Marchand, from his privileged vantage point, illuminates Napoleon the man in rich and absorbing detail.' - John H Gill

Napoleon: On War

Napoleon: On War PDF Author: Bruno Colson
Publisher: OUP Oxford
ISBN: 0191508764
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 493

Book Description
This is the book on war that Napoleon never had the time or the will to complete. In exile on the island of Saint-Helena, the deposed Emperor of the French mused about a great treatise on the art of war, but in the end changed his mind and ordered the destruction of the materials he had collected for the volume. Thus was lost what would have been one of the most interesting and important books on the art of war ever written, by one of the most famous and successful military leaders of all time. In the two centuries since, several attempts have been made to gather together some of Napoleon's 'military maxims', with varying degrees of success. But not until now has there been a systematic attempt to put Napoleon's thinking on war and strategy into a single authoritative volume, reflecting both the full spectrum of his thinking on these matters as well as the almost unparalleled range of his military experience, from heavy cavalry charges in the plains of Russia or Saxony to counter-insurgency operations in Egypt or Spain. To gather the material for this book, military historian Bruno Colson spent years researching Napoleon's correspondence and other writings, including a painstaking examination of perhaps the single most interesting source for his thinking about war: the copy-book of General Bertrand, the Emperor's most trusted companion on Saint-Helena, in which he unearthed a Napoleonic definition of strategy which is published here for the first time. The huge amount of material brought together for this ground-breaking volume has been carefully organized to follow the framework of Carl von Clausewitz's classic On War, allowing a fascinating comparison between Napoleon's ideas and those of his great Prussian interpreter and adversary, and highlighting the intriguing similarities between these two founders of modern strategic thinking.
