Book Description
Excerpt from The Lantern, Vol. 1: September, 1915 I have forgot much, Cynara! Gone with the wind, Flung roses, roses riotously with the throng, Dancing, to put thy pale, lost lilies out of mind; But I was desolate and sick Of an Old passion, Yea, all the time, because the dance was long: I have been faithful to thee, Cynara! In my fashion. I cried for madder music and for stronger wine, But when the feast is finished and the lamps expire, Then falls thy shadow, Cynara! The night is thine; And I am desolate and sick of an Old passion, Yea, hungry for the lips Of my desire: I have been faithful to thee, Cynara! In my fashion. Book Description
Excerpt from The Lantern, Vol. 1: March, 1915 to March, 1916 HE most characteristic note in the mental atti tude of this day in this country is cocksureness. In a period of discontent marked by many nervous disorders and a militant zeal for reform this cocksureness is lamentable. The result of it is a quick conclusion on every important question that bobs up; and so we have large cults of wild-eyed enthusiasts, such as the anti-vivisectionists and the anti-vaccinationists, going up and down the land with flaming banners; also innumerable movements to make perfect the government of man and remedy the mis takes Of God. History is repeating itself. We have the same fertility of projects for the salvation of the world that Emerson discusses in his essay on society in New England in the first half of the last century when the soldiery of dissent were calling in question the authority of all established customs. Then as now society was tormented by agitations born of the limited knowledge of a narrow outlook that makes dogmat ists of men. Even at that early period there was a prohibition movement. Many New Englanders of those days were just as sure as the Prohibitionists now rampant that no good could come out of wine. The question whether to drink or not, in their Opinion, was not for debate. The matter was self-evident. This same arrogant cocksureness is again manifest. And it is so aggressive that it is winning its way by intimidation. Now the drink problem is not so simple as Pro Copyright 1915 by the Pacific Publication co. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Lantern, Vol. 15: November, 1935 The discomfort on board increased when we cast anchor after two hours run straight out into open sea. Manuelo, the Portuguese man of all work, and Bill Clough got out the fishing tackle, lines of thick rope with chain on the end, baited with quivering chunks of freshly caught cunners. We were after sand sharks. Mrs. Clough turned away and put her handkerchief to her face. She suffered from a delicate digestion and the boat was already swinging high on the slow sea swell. Miss Agatha was of sterner stuff. She grimly accepted a line and let it fall with a splash over the side. Well, there's nothing to do now but wait. Eh, Sir Horton? Some of Dr. Clough's assurance had drained away but his voice still boomed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Lantern, Vol. 6: 1897-1899, 1901-1902 This ideal cannot, after all, be too often gathered up, out of the region of sub-conscious instinct that it occupies in most of us, into few and explicit words. To sound, for the students themselves and for the world, without the best note in the play of the intellect here, so far as the gamut of pure literature extends; to give expression to the varied life of the former, in aspects serious, airy, or studious, and exhibit to each the other's excellences; to represent abroad how the currents run in their thinking and feeling, and at home to stimulate further and more perfect craftsmanship - this is the end that the lantern proposes to itself. In every issue it must represent the College as it exists at that precise moment of time, butfiit must contain only the silk o' the. Kine out of the microcosm selecting only the rarest of the atmosphere, the sweetest of the scale, the most brilliant of the dyes. Our means to do this never change.
