This book provides a new view on Luke’s Gospel by introducing it as the source of the New Testament. A close reading of the works of Flavius Josephus and Latin inscriptions confirms the validity of the chronological landmarks delivered by the Evangelist. Together these three sources form a cohesive whole like a puzzle with finely-tuned pieces. The Codex Bezae Cantabrigiensis, which preserves the oldest known text of the Gospels and Acts written in Greek, attests that the Evangelist fulfilled the purpose of veracity advertised in the preface. The reliability of his work is linked to its early publication, in the decade following the events so that even Mark and Paul had knowledge of it. From this point of view, the “Lukan priority” that preserves the historical truth about Jesus’ life, would no longer be just an assumption. In this context, the conditions under which the Third Gospel was written are revealed, and with them, the objectives pursued by those who assumed responsibility for it, and who can be identified. Let us hope these pages will encourage other biblical Scholars to investigate the Third Gospel and Acts from the perspective of the “Lukan priority”.

This book sheds light on the career of Samuel Prideaux Tregelles, and in doing so touches on numerous aspects of nineteenth-century British and European religious history. Several recent scholars have celebrated the 200th anniversary of the German textual critic Tischendorf but Tregelles, his contemporary English rival, has been neglected, despite his achievements being comparable. In addition to his decisive contribution to Biblical textual scholarship, this study of Tregelles’ career sheds light on developments among Quakers in the period, and Tregelles’s enthusiastic involvement with the early nineteenth-century Welsh literary renaissance usefully supplements recent studies on Iolo Morganwg. The early career of Tregelles also gives valuable fresh detail to the origins of the Plymouth Brethren, (in both England and Italy) the study of whose early history has become more extensive over the last twenty years. The whole of Tregelles’s career therefore illuminates neglected aspects of Victorian religious life.

The Codex Vercellensis is one of the great treasures of the Vercelli library, containing the four Gospels. Written during the fourth century, it is the oldest remaining Latin manuscript of the Greek New Testament and one of the most important witnesses to the early understanding of the Gospels. In this edition, Weissenrieder and Visinoni provide the Latin text of the work parallel to spectral images, indicating abbreviations, lineation, foliation and staurograms as well as a (reconstructed) critical edition with references to the most important texts of the Old Latin tradition as well as Greek and Syriac manuscripts and a commentary to this unique Latin translation. The analyses involved will be: (1) digital methods, (2) philological and theological, (3) translation theories in antiquity as well as (4) genealogical. The authors call into question assumptions about the text preserved in the manuscript, arguing that it represents an early stage of the Latin Gospels. The manuscript will be examined in light of its wide-ranging cultural and historical context. As such, the project aligns itself methodologically with the field of manuscript studies and attempts to integrate the specialized expertise of various disciplines in the study of a single object.
