Book Description
Excerpt from The Lady of Kingdoms "Well, you can't get a word out of her," Mrs. Wallis said in an accent compounded equally of virtuous disgust and balked curiosity. "No matter what you say to her. She says the child's hers, and who the father is ain't nobody else's business. And if anybody thinks they can go do any better, they've got my permission to try." Mrs. Wallis's hard sharp black eyes, set high in her flat toad-like head, snapped a challenge to the three women who sat about the bed. With a double motion that was habitual to her, she fluffed up with one hand her mat of thickly-curled artificial hair and pushed down with the other a perpetually obtrusive corset-steel. "There ain't a drop of shame in her anywhere as far as I can see," she added irritably, turning to the woman who lay on the bed. Mrs. Drake, to whom Mrs. Wallis addressed this last remark, emitted nothing beyond a nonplussed, "You don't!" "Who'd have thought Gert Beebee would ever come to this pass?" - Mrs. Tubman took it up. Mrs. Tubman was a pasty, bulging, fatly-shapeless woman with one fixed dull eye and one roving bright one. "Why, I used to think she was a real clever little girl." "She was," Mrs. Drake answered. "Smart as a whip, and bright as a dollar." She added after a pause, "Southward always said she liked her better'n most any girl 'cept Hester when they was in school together." No one replied for a moment. And in that instant, the same expression dropped a non-committal curtain over the features of Mrs. Drake's guests. The Sufficiency and Defects of the English Communion Office (Classic Reprint)

The Sufficiency and Defects of the English Communion Office (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: A. G. Walpole Sayer
Publisher: CUP Archive
ISBN:
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 172

Book Description
Excerpt from The Sufficiency and Defects of the English Communion Office HE object which led to the enterprise of this subject was essentially practical. Considerable outcry had been raised against the interpolation into the service by the Celebrant of parts of the Unreformed Office. The outcry interpreted this action as throwing doubt or discredit on the Office of our Church. And this interpretation is justified by the open avowals of many who are addicted to this practice. They allege defect or deficiency in our Office. Others, indeed, without such allegation or conscious admission, defend their interpolations as conducing to greater fulness or richness. The object of this work in part'is to attempt to disprove the charges of insufficiency and to show the redundancy of such interpolations. The nature of the interpolations in View has been already defined. There is no reference to any private1 intercessions or devo tions of the Celebrant, but to the direct interpolation of portions of other Offices.
