Global Production Networking and Technological Change in East Asia

Global Production Networking and Technological Change in East Asia PDF Author: Shahid Yusuf
Publisher: World Bank Publications
ISBN: 0821356186
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 501

Book Description
In the coming decades, East Asian economies must face the challenges of an increasingly globalized marketplace. This book explores the changing parameters of competition in East Asia, and argues that success ultimately will depend on the ability of the region's firms to harness the potential of global production networks and to build their own innovative capability. Presenting the latest findings on global production networks and the evolution of technological capabilities, it provides researchers, students, and policymakers with in-depth information and analysis on key issues related to growth and development in East Asia. East Asian firms must not only achieve greater efficiency but also become more innovative, offering differentiated products in order to vie with other first-tier suppliers of multinational corporations. These firms will also need to develop a technological edge if they are to compete with corporations from the leading OECD countries and form their own global production networks. 'Global Production Networking and Technological Change in East Asia' argues that a development strategy linked to technological advance will be necessary to foster the growth of innovative national firms that can remain competitive in global markets.

Going Multinational

Going Multinational PDF Author: Frédérique Sachwald
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1135137978
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 402

Book Description
At the beginning of the 1990s, Korean firms embarked on an impressive wave of direct investment abroad. This dramatic multinationalization was considered as yet another sign of Korea's remarkable economic performance, especially as a high proportion of the foreign ventures were located in advanced countries. But this unbalanced quest for globalization actually tested the 'Korean model' to its limits; after the 1997 crisis a new policy prepared the way for a surge of inward investment. Using empirical tests and case-studies, this collection shows that Korean groups have invested in developed countries to jump over trade barriers, but also to source advanced technology and marketing capabilities. Moreover, their ambitious strategies have been stimulated by oligopolistic rivalry among the chaebols. From a policy perspective, the book provides an original discussion of national ownership by questioning the substitutability between inward and outward foreign investment and its relationship with the evolution of the national innovation system. By shedding light on the pattern of Korea's internationalization, these essays make a valuable contribution to the theory of international production and provide important insights for the current policy debates on globalization and innovation-led growth.

Technological Capabilities and Export Success in Asia PDF Author: Dieter Ernst

ISBN: 1134725590
Category : Social Science

Book Description
What accounts for export success? A team of international contributors show that learning and capability formation are critical to sustain competitiveness. Through a series of case studies of firms in the textile and garment and electronics industries of five Asian economies - Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Indonesia and Vietnam - Technological Capabilities and Export Success in Asia demonstrates that cheap labour, combined with currency devaluation, is no longer sufficient for export success.

Economic Governance and the Challenge of Flexibility in East Asia

Economic Governance and the Challenge of Flexibility in East Asia PDF Author: Frederic C. Deyo
Publisher: Rowman & Littlefield
ISBN: 9780742509443
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 264

Book Description
This book analyzes the institutional underpinnings of East Asia's dynamic growth by exploring the interplay between governance and flexibility. As the challenges of promoting and sustaining economic growth become ever more complex, firms in both advanced and industrializing countries face constant pressures for change from markets and technology. Globalization, heightened competition, and shorter product cycles mean that markets are increasingly volatile and fragmented. To contend with demands for higher quality, quicker delivery, and cost efficiencies, firms must enhance their capability to innovate and diversify. Achieving this flexibility, in turn, often requires new forms of governance--arrangements that facilitate the exchange of resources among diverse yet interdependent economic actors. Moving beyond the literature's emphasis on developed economies, this volume emphasizes the relevance of the links between governance and flexibility for understanding East Asia's explosive economic growth over the past quarter century. In case studies that encompass a variety of key industrial sectors and countries, the contributors emphasize the importance of network patterns of governance for facilitating flexibility in firms throughout the region. Their analyses illuminate both the strengths and limitations of recent growth strategies and offer insights into prospects for continued expansion in the wake of the East Asian economic crisis of the late 1990s. Contributions by: Richard P. Appelbaum, Lu-lin Cheng, Stephen W. K. Chiu, Frederic C. Deyo, Richard F. Doner, Dieter Ernst, Eric Hershberg, Tai Lok Lui, Rajah Rasiah, David A. Smith, and Poh-Kam Wong.

New Multinational Enterprises from Korea and Taiwan

New Multinational Enterprises from Korea and Taiwan PDF Author: Roger van Hoesel
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1134647670
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 206

Book Description
This volume represents the first substantive study of emerging multinationals (MNEs) from Asian economies, drawing on the unique experiences of South Korea and Taiwan. Combining an econometric investigation with detailed case studies of leading Korean and Taiwanese electronics companies, it aims to demystify the nature and theoretical implications of these dynamic economic regions. The author argues that many of these `new multinationals do not possess the characteristics typically ascribed to MNEs, such as technological leadership, strong marketing positions or advanced managerial capabilities. This is highlighted by documentation of recent developments in outward investment from Korea and Taiwan at both micro and macro level. The implications of the recent Asian crisis for the internationaliztion of Korean and Taiwanese firms are also explored.
