Book Description
Excerpt from The King of the Mountains Sir, said he in French, but with a deplora ble accent, my name is Hermann Schultz; I have just passed some months in Greece, and your book has been with me in all my travels. This exordium penetrated my heart with a pla cid joy; the voice Of the stranger appeared to me more melodious than the music of Mozart, and I directed towards his gold spectacles a look sparkling with gratitude. You cannot think, dear reader, how much we love those who have taken the trouble to peruse our scribblings. For my part, if I have ever desired to be rich, it is for the sake of securing good incomes to all those persons who have read my works. Book Description
Excerpt from The King of the Mountains: Translated From the French Edmond About visited Greece in 1851. He seems to have set out with school-boy and Byronic ideas of Greece, and to have been disappointed. He found that the women were plain, that the classic Ilissus was "a little damp when it rains," that there was, and could be, no Hellenic aristocracy. A generation earlier, every one, in the spirit of egalite, had been equally drubbed by the Turks, and an aristocracy cannot be made out of such materials. He admitted, in contradiction of a German theory, that the modern Greeks are not Slavs, but he had little else that was good to say for them. Even Greek courage is "prudent and reflective"; Canaris is a rare exception. Greek love of liberty is mere hatred of order: Greek equality is mere jealousy. "This important person is a traitor, the other a thief; the next suborns murder: the purest have infamous morals. No Greek is esteemed in Greece." Book Description
Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. King of the Mountain

King of the Mountain PDF Author: Arnold M. Ludwig
Publisher: University Press of Kentucky
ISBN: 0813143306
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 496

Book Description
People may choose to ignore their animal heritage by interpreting their behavior as divinely inspired, socially purposeful, or even self-serving, all of which they attribute to being human, but they masticate, fornicate, and procreate, much as chimps and apes do, so they should have little cause to get upset if they learn that they act like other primates when they politically agitate, debate, abdicate, placate, and administrate, too." -- from the book King of the Mountain presents the startling findings of Arnold M. Ludwig's eighteen-year investigation into why people want to rule. The answer may seem obvious -- power, privilege, and perks -- but any adequate answer also needs to explain why so many rulers cling to power even when they are miserable, trust nobody, feel besieged, and face almost certain death. Ludwig's results suggest that leaders of nations tend to act remarkably like monkeys and apes in the way they come to power, govern, and rule. Profiling every ruler of a recognized country in the twentieth century -- over 1,900 people in all, Ludwig establishes how rulers came to power, how they lost power, the dangers they faced, and the odds of their being assassinated, committing suicide, or dying a natural death. Then, concentrating on a smaller sub-set of 377 rulers for whom more extensive personal information was available, he compares six different kinds of leaders, examining their characteristics, their childhoods, and their mental stability or instability to identify the main predictors of later political success. Ludwig's penetrating observations, though presented in a lighthearted and entertaining way, offer important insight into why humans have engaged in war throughout recorded history as well as suggesting how they might live together in peace.
