Book Description
In The Foundations of Arithmetic, Gottlob Frege contended that the difference between concepts and objects was absolute. He meant that no object could be a concept and no concept an object. Benno Kerry disagreed; he contended that a concept could be an object, and that therefore the difference between concepts and objects was only relative. In this book, Jolley aims to understand the debate between Frege and Kerry. But Jolley's purpose is not so much to champion either side; rather, it is to utilize an understanding of the debate to shed light on the work of Ludwig Wittgenstein-and vice versa. Jolley not only sifts through the debate between Frege and Kerry, but also through subsequent versions of the debate in J. J. Valberg and Wilfred Sellars. Jolley's goal is to show that the central notion of Philosophical Investigations, that of a 'conceptual investigation', is a legacy of the Frege/Kerry debate and also a contribution to it. Jolley concludes that the difference between concepts and objects is as absolute in its way in Philosophical Investigations as it was in The Foundations of Arithmetic and that recognizing the absoluteness of the difference in Philosophical Investigations provides a beginning for a 'resolute' reading of Wittgenstein's book.

The Judgment Game
Author: Eli Pope
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781735815916
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 434
Book Description
Billy Jay Cader came from an abusive past. Self-preservation forced him to run away at the age of fourteen. His daddy was full of demons and played a sadistic game in a lottery-type punishment with his boy. When Billy Jay ran from his daddy, he hoped to outrun those demons as well. As time passed, he realized he hadn't been able to flee fast enough to escape them. Now those mental monsters were tightly nestled within. He was the new vessel to carry his daddy's wrath. This is the story of how that monster from his past propagated into Billy Jay's psyche and took over, compelling him to become the next generation of evil. Billy Jay's young sons, Bill James, and Darrell Lee were now the recipients of his wrath as his hopeless, drunken wife watched from a distance. The story begins from the early Cader family traditions and the marally depraved control that the game of the Mason jar truly posesses. The twisted and deranged values of retribution for wrongs committed, through a game of chance. This series is the one to compel you to binge read and then crave the next allocation to see where the madness takes you. Full of mystery, evil, twisted love, erotica, lies and murder. Billy Jay Cader is pure evil incarnate, drawing a small forgotten coastal town along the Gulf of Florida, circa the 80's, into the web of a sociopath on a journey of destruction. His own? Or everyone that he encounters? Buy a ticket and ride a rollercoaster of fear battling faith, the past conquering hope, and the unforgiving allure of a simple game constructed of wood squares and a glass Mason jar. A game capable of destroying lives with a simple shake and release of the small wooden punishment tile. THE MASON JAR SERIES written by ELI POPE BOOK 2-THE SPARK OF WRATH coming soon.

Judgment and Planning in Chess
Author: Max Euwe
Publisher: Ishi Press
ISBN: 9784871874717
Category : Games
Languages : en
Pages : 200
Book Description
This is a basic book that teaches strategic planning in chess. It is a book that an entire generation of aspiring chess players studied and read, but seems to be nearly forgotten today.Written by a former Chess Champion of the world, this book has as its basis an entirely novel idea which will help players over a real difficulty. Many books have been written on the openings, some knowledge of which is essential to those who wish to enjoy their chess by playing it well. But after eight to fifteen moves or so the book on openings must of necessity break off, and the student is left with the intimation that the position in question is even, or that White or Black stands slightly better. This book is concerned with the game from then on.The author studies a number of orthodox openings and position from the point where the opening stage has come to an end. He describes the characteristics of the position reached, shows why one or the other side stands better, and gives a thoroughly practical demonstration of the means by which the game can be brought to its logical conclusion.
