Book Description
Excerpt from The Journal of the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland: Formerly the Royal Historical and Archaeological Association of Ireland, Founded as the Kilkenny Archaeological Society, 1895 HE most marked feature of the Society's work during the year 1895, the period covered by the present Volume, has been the great increase in what has been aptly described as its clinica work. The Excursions, in which our Antiquities have been visited and examined as they lie, have been more numerous and more extensive than in any former year of the Society's existence. The accounts of these Excursions form a conspicuous part of this Volume. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Journal of the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland, 1896: Formerly the Royal Historical and Archæological Association of Ireland HE Preface to the last Volume of the Society's Journal pointed to the great influence which the wider scope of the Society's Excursions had upon our work. The Excursions in 1896, though less novel in their conception, still impart some prominent features to the present Volume. Book Description
Excerpt from The Journal of the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland: Formerly the Royal Historical and Archaeological Association of Ireland The production of a Volume for each successive year has not inaptly been compared to the building up of a cairn commemorative of the progress of the Society, marking its onward path in an increasing sphere of usefulness. The builders of the cairn are not alone the contributors to the Volume; every Member of the Society who has contributed to its funds, may fairly claim, with some degree of honest pride, that he or she has helped to raise the pile. Book Description
Excerpt from The Journal of the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland, 1899 HE Papers and Proceedings of the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland now placed in the hands of the Fellows and Members, form the Ninth Volume of the Fifth Series of The Journal (volume Twenty nine of the Consecutive Series). It will be found equal to any of the previous Volumes as regards the interest ing variety of its contents, and the importance of the subjects discussed. The principal feature of the Volume is, no doubt the full account of the places visited by the Society in the Islands off the West Coast of Scotland, the Orkneys and Caithness, in the month of June, 1899; this forms a valuable and instructive chapter for the Irish Student in Comparative Archaeology. Of the five Celtic nationalities, the Society has still to visit Brittany and the Isle of Man to complete the Series, and by so doing, place on record the distinctive characteristics of the existing Antiquarian remains still to be seen in these countries. J. Lynch, who also notes some stones carved with cups, circles, and other markings, in that county. These Kerry districts are well worthy of systematic investigation; and Mr. Lynch has done good work in elucidating these antiquities of this interesting county. Book Description
Excerpt from The Journal of the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland, Vol. 3 of 43: Formerly the Royal Historical and Archaeological Association of Ireland, Founded in 1849, as the Kilkenny Archaeological Society; 1913 The present volume of the Society's Journal is concerned more with the mediaeval than with the earlier history of Ireland. Mr. Westropp's continuation of his monumental work on the Prehistoric Remains of Clare, Mr. Hamilton's topographical study of one of the Roads out of Tara, and Miss Dobbs' note on a Burial Custom of the Iron Age are the only papers devoted to pre-Christian antiquities. Mr. Tuite reports a cup and circle-stone in Westmeath, and Mr. Westropp an earthwork at Glencree (which, however, does not appear to be very ancient), in the Miscellanea. We should also note Mr. Forsayeth's account of his investigation of an ancient hearth. Mr. Crawford continues and completes his most valuable list of the Early Cross-slabs and Pillars, and also contributes a note on the construction of the Oran round tower. Mr. Stephens makes an ingenious suggestion as to the explanation of a panel on one of the Monasterboice crosses. Mr. Forsayeth describes a souterrain in Co. Waterford. These are the only contributions to the study of the period of Celtic Christianity contained in this volume. On the other hand, we have an unusually large number of valuable historical studies on the Anglo-Norman and subsequent periods.
