Excerpt: ...formerly known and practised, allowed it to assume his name; and consequently it has now become well known by the euphonious title of the " Wothlytypo process." This process, in brief, is as follows: --Collodion, previously saturated with the nitrates of uranium and silver in certain relative proportions, is poured over the surface of a sheet of paper. This is suspended in a dark room until dry, after which it is exposed under a negative in tho usual manner. When the details arc all brought out, the sensitive salt is removed by washing. Tho tone is now of a bistre character, which is not usually approved of, and to improve which it is immersed for brief time in a toning-solution. 'When tho desired tint has boon obtained, it is removed, rinsed, and dried. Such, in brief, is the Wothlytype process. The papor most suitable for giving good results is found to bo a close-grained, hard-sized kind, the size employed being preferably arrowroot. Mr. Sanford, tho well-known photographio paper-maker, prepares that which is used in this country. I have been present during its preparation, and was struck with the amount of time and care bestowed on each sheet. The operator, having laid the sheet of paper flat on a glass slab bofore her, charged a large sponge with the thick, pasty-looking size which stood in proximity to her, and rubbed every part of the surface over in a thorough manner for some minutes. As no one here is likely to care for minute particulars concerning the process of sizing, I shall not further allude to it, more especially as the papor can be purchased ready prepared much cheaper and better than any one could do it himself.
