Book Description
Excerpt from The Journal of Experimental Zoology, 1917, Vol. 22 The temperatures to which the eggs were subjected varied from 32 c. To 37 c., and the length Of the exposures from 1% to 90 minutes. The treatment with hypertonic sea-water was also varied, and the interval between the two treatments, as well as the interval between the spawning Of the eggs and the beginning Of the experiment. A detailed study of these varia tions is given in a later section and in the tables. Some eggs were fertilized, in order that a comparison might be made between the normal and the parthenogenetic develop ment. In fertilizing eggs, care must be taken to avoid poly spermy by using a dilute sperm suspension. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Journal of Experimental Zoology, 1910, Vol. 8 The species on which my work was done was Stylotella helio phila Wilson, a monaxonid demosponge belonging to the order Helichondrina. This species will be described in a monograph on the Sponges of Beaufort, N. C., soon to be published by Dr. H. V. Wilson, and I am indebted to Dr. Wilson for having called my attention to this sponge, which in all respects was extremely satisfactory for the work I had planned. My investigations were carried out in June and July at the Beaufort Laboratory of the United States Bureau of Fisheries, and I am under obligations to Commissioner G. M. Bowers for the privilege of working at this laboratory and to its director, Mr. H. D. Aller, for generous pro vision during my stay there. Book Description
Excerpt from The Journal of Experimental Zoology, Vol. 1: The Journal of Experimental Zoology, Baltimore The egg of Dentalium, like that of Cerebratulus, possesses certain features by means of which the axis may be determined in the living egg from the moment of its release from the ovary. The egg is more or less deeply pigmented, perfectly opaque, and of a color that varies in diflerent individuals from light olivaceous to reddish brown or almost brick red. When first set free the egg is somewhat irregular, but quickly becomes more rounded. It is then seen to be very considerably flattened, so as often to be almost biscuit-shaped, one side being always more flattened than the other, and often more or less irregular in contour. Viewed by reflected light the central region of each of the flat tened sides is seen to be occupied by a very distinct, though vaguely bounded, white area, nearly or quite free from pigment (fig. 1) these areas, as shown by the subsequent development, correspond with the two poles of the egg, and the more flattened side, which.
