Book Description
Who were the Jaredites? They were men of courage: kings, heroes, and princes who performed great deeds as great warriors who won decisive battles. From their homeland at the place of the "great tower" (Gen. 11: 1-9), they were led by God, to eventually relocate in the Americas. There they established a kingdom and grew to be a numerous population with kings and prophets; only to be eventually annihilated by internecine war. The Jaredite Chronology introduces the evidence that allows one to follow that progression from their Old World beginnings through their New World end, while addressing the multiple similarities between the Jaredite and Olmec civilizations.

Book Description
The Olmec civilization has long been considered to be the Jaredite civilization. New evidence is presented here that provides a reliable correlation of chronology between Mesoamerican archaeology and the Jaredite timeline. New etymological and scientific evidence now provides a method of establishing a more detailed geography of the ¿land northward¿ referred to throughout the Book of Mormon, the Old World point of departure of the Jaredites, and Olmec cultural elements reflected in the Book of Mormon text.

Illuminating the Jaredite Records

Illuminating the Jaredite Records PDF Author: Daniel Belnap
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781944394974

Book Description
This is a new volume from the Book of Mormon Academy at Brigham Young University. This volume explores the relationship between the Nephite and the Jaredite records culturally, politically, literarily, and theologically. The first approach is a cultural-historical lens, in which elements of Jaredite culture are discussed, including the impact of a Jaredite subculture on Nephite politics during the reign of the judges, and a Mesopotamia perspective as seership and divination, and the brother of Jared's experience as a liminal one. The second grouping looks at the book of Ether through a narratological lens, all three papers exploring different aspects of Moroni's construction of the book of Ether. The third grouping explores the book of Ether's depiction of women, as it contains one of the most descriptive, yet ambivalent female figures in the Book of Mormon, both historically and in our contemporary era. Finally, the book of Ether is reviewed via a teaching lens. In Alma 37, Alma the Younger explained the teaching value of the Jaredite records, these last two studies examine ways in which the book of Ether in particular can be taught to a modern audience.

King Benjamin's Speech

King Benjamin's Speech PDF Author: John Woodland Welch
Publisher:
ISBN: 9780934893305
Category : Book of Mormon
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
For readers of the Book of Mormon, King Benjamin's speech is a treasure trove of inspiration, wisdom, eloquence, and spiritual insight. King Benjamin's Speech: "That Ye May Learn Wisdom" is the most substantial collection of studies ever to focus exclusively on this landmark address. The contributors examine this speech in the multifaceted contexts in which it was delivered: as a classic speech of a departing leader near the time of his death, as the focus of an annual festival season mandated anciently under the law of Moses, as part of a covenant renewal ceremony delivered within the sacred precinct of the Nephite temple in Zarahemla, and as preparation for the coronation of a new king. Historical and linguistic tools and information are employed in these essays to help the reader to better grasp the speech's historical setting, its doctrinal implications, its literary qualities, its influence then and now, and its overall brilliance.

Book Description
The Jaredite civilization began about 2,300 B.C. Between the great Flood and about 200 years before Abraham lived. The Jaredite civilization spans more than 2,000 years ending in approximately 300 B.C. when the last surviving Jaredite; Coriantumr was found by the people of Zarahemla on the American continent. There story begins in Babylon just after the construction of the Tower of Babel; during the time when the people of Mesopotamia were being scattered and their languages were being confounded by the Lord. This book details the history and travels contained in the three Jaredite records referenced in the Book of Mormon including their genealogy spanning from Ether to Jared, from Jared to Shem and from Shem to Adam and Eve. It is my goal to shed some light and insight concerning the Jaredites. Who they were, what they did, why they were chosen by the Lord at a time when chaos reigned, where they went when they left Babylon and how they got there? Who were the brothers Jared and Mahonri Moriancumr? How did they go from having sufficient faith that forced the Savior himself to appear to their spiritual leader to being so wicked that their entire civilization ended in war, contention, death and destruction. This work is an account of what I think I have learned as a result of extensive research on this topic and so I would use Alma's words and "speak unto you concerning those twenty-four plates".
