Peroxisomal Disorders and Regulation of Genes
Author: Frank Roels
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 9780306481741
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 429
Book Description
In most peroxisomal disorders the nervous system is severely affected which explains the clinical and community burden they represent. This is the first book to focus not only on the mutations causing these inherited illnesses, but also on mechanisms that regulate, suppress or enhance expression of genes and their products (enzymes). Indeed since the success and completion of the Human Genome Project all genes (coding DNA sequences) are known. However, of many, their function, and the role of the gene product has not been determined. An example is X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy, the most frequent peroxisomal disorder. Children are born healthy, but in more than 1 out of 3, demyelination of the brain starts unpredictably and they die in a vegetative state. The gene mutated in most families has been known for 10 years; but the true role of the encoded protein, ALDp, is still speculative; and within the same family, very severe and asymptomatic clinical histories co-exist, unexplained by the mutation.

Atherosclerosis, Hypertension and Diabetes
Author: Grant N. Pierce
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9781402073113
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 528
Book Description
This volume is devoted to atherosclerosis, hypertension, anddiabetes, three of the most important disease conditions in the worldtoday. Nutritional intervention, cholesterol lowering agents, lipidsthemselves, particularly oxidized LDL, protein modification byADP-ribose, bone marrow study, endothelial cell dysfunction, angiotensin, and the role of infection and inflammation are alldiscussed in the context of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. The hypertension section focuses on factors that may be responsiblefor high blood pressure, such as genetic predisposition, vascularhyperplasia and remodeling, insulin resistance, neurological aspectssuch as hypothalamic peptides. Also discussed are the possiblecontributions of the cellular function of the endothelium, nutrition, kidney dysfunction, leptin, and the brain. Novel routes of drugdelivery for treatment of hypertension is also a focus. As for diabetes, the risk factors and mechanisms responsible fordiabetic vascular and cardiac dysfunction are discussed. Lipid profilechanges and fibrinolysis in diabetic patients is detailed, along withadipogenesis, diabetic cardiomyopathy, energy metabolism in thediabetic heart, vanadate as an alternative to insulin, insulinresistance mechanisms, and neurotransmitters as targets for theprevention of cardiovascular disease and diabetes. These manuscripts were invited from scientists who presented state ofthe art lectures at the XVII World Congress of the InternationalSociety for Heart Research held in Winnipeg in July 2001.

American Firearms Makers
Author: Arthur Merwyn Carey
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 176
Book Description
"American Firearms Makers is without question the most complete reference work of its kind in print. It is a cyclopedia of firearms makers of both long and short arms, custom made and arms made under federal and state government contracts. It covers the period from the Colonial era to the end of the nineteenth century. American Firearms Makers contains more than 2100 entries arranged in alphabetical order from Andrew Agnew to John Zuendorff. All the great makers, such as Colt, Derringer, Drepperd, Pomeroy, Whitney, etc., have considerable material to cover a complete summary of their activities and their place in American firearms history, not to mention the hundreds and hundreds of other makers whose names may be puzzling to collectors. Each entry will tell you the correct spelling of the maker's name, the span of years he was active, the town or city and state in which he was located, and the type of arms he produced. The data are intentionally concise; but, where it is appropriate, other information is abundantly supplied: patent dates, descriptive markings, calibers and dimensions of the arms, etc. Other books have covered sections of the country and limited periods of the subject's history. This is the first book covering the entire United States during the flintlock, percussion, and metallic-cartridge cycles of arms. The material in American Firearms Makers represents thirty-three years of collecting, researching, and inspecting old firearms, both in the United States and abroad. The author has one of the best reference libraries in this field. This volume has been awaited by collectors, antique dealers, libraries, and museums. American Firearms Makers is illustrated with authentic contemporary pictures together with photographs from the author's collection. It contains in addition a chronology and a bibliography"--Jacket flap
