A strain energy theory is developed for the calculation of the critical load for the inward bulge type of general instability of reinforced monocoque cylinders subjected to pure bending. The deflected shape at buckling is assumed to be represented by an expression containing eight free parameters in addition to the two characterizing the wave lengths of the circumferential and axial directions. The theory is applied to two representative cylinders of the GALCIT test series and to two of the PIBAL series. The critical stresses calculated are 8.3 to 22.9 percent higher than the experimental values.

This paper is the second part of a series of reports on the inward bulge type buckling of monocoque cylinders. It presents the results of an experimental investigation of buckling in combined bending and compression. In the investigation it was found that the theory developed in part 1 of the present series predicts the buckling load in combined bending and compression with the same degree of accuracy as the older theory does in pure bending. In the realm covered by the experiments no systematic variation of the parameter "n" was observed. The analysis of the test results afforded a check on the theories of buckling of a curved panel. The agreement between experiment and theory was reasonably good. In addition, the effect of the end conditions upon the stress distribution under loads and upon initial stresses was investigated.

In the present part 1 of a series of reports on the inward bulge type buckling of monocoque cylinders the buckling load in combined bending and compression is first derived. Next the reduction in the buckling load becuse of a nonlinear direction stress distribtuion is determined. In experiments nonlinearilty may result from an inadequate stiffness of the end attachments, in actual airplanes from the existence of concentrated loads or cut-outs. The effect of a shearing force upon the critcal load is investigated through an analysis of the results of tests carried out at GALCIT with 55 reinforced monocoque cylinders. Finally a simple criterion of general instability is presented in the form of a buckling inequality which should be helpful to the designer of a monocoque in determining the sizes of the rings required for excluding the possibility of inward bulge type "buckling.".

In the present third part of an investigation dealing with the inward bulge type buckling of monocoque cylinders the theory of buckling in bure bending is refined through the consideration of the shear strain energy stored in the sheet covering, the assumption of a revised deflected shape of the rings at buckling, and the use of summations in place of some of the integrations of the preceding reports. The calculation of the shear strain energy is based on an estimated variation of the shear rigidity of the buckled panels of sheet with increasing compressive stress, which makes it possible to dispense with the empiricism involved in the procedure of the preceding papers according to which the value of the parameter n had to be determined from data obtained in general instability tests. The revised theory is applied to all the sheet-covered specimens tested in pure bending in the Guggenheim Aeronautics Laboratory of the California Institute of Technology and at the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn. The agreement between theory and experiment is found to be good.
