Reinforced Concrete and the Modernization of American Building, 1900-1930

Reinforced Concrete and the Modernization of American Building, 1900-1930 PDF Author: Amy E. Slaton
Publisher: JHU Press
ISBN: 0801872979
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 280

Book Description
Examining the proliferation of reinforced-concrete construction in the United States after 1900, historian Amy E. Slaton considers how scientific approaches and occupations displaced traditionally skilled labor. The technology of concrete buildings—little studied by historians of engineering, architecture, or industry—offers a remarkable case study in the modernization of American production. The use of concrete brought to construction the new procedures and priorities of mass production. These included a comprehensive application of science to commercial enterprise and vast redistributions of skills, opportunities, credit, and risk in the workplace. Reinforced concrete also changed the American landscape as building buyers embraced the architectural uniformity and simplicity to which the technology was best suited. Based on a wealth of data that includes university curricula, laboratory and company records, organizational proceedings, blueprints, and promotional materials as well as a rich body of physical evidence such as tools, instruments, building materials, and surviving reinforced-concrete buildings, this book tests the thesis that modern mass production in the United States came about not simply in answer to manufacturers' search for profits, but as a result of a complex of occupational and cultural agendas.

Book Description
Excerpt from Concrete Factories: An Illustrated Review of the Principles of Construction of Reinforced Concrete Building, Including Reports of the Sub-Committee on Tests, the U. S. Geological Survey and the French Rules on Reinforced Concrete The subject of concrete and reinforced concrete is one of the most important matters that is now before the American public. So important has it been considered by those connected with engineering, that the leading societies in this field have associated themselves in the creation of a Joint Committee on Concrete and Reinforced Concrete, the members of which Committee are representatives of the following societies: American Society of Civil Engineers; American Society for Testing Materials; American Railway Engineering & Maintenance of Way Association, Association of American Portland Cement Manufacturers. In addition to this, the following organizations are lending their hearty co-operation in the work. National Board of Fire Underwriters; National Fire Protection Association; The Concrete Block Machine Manufacturers Association, and the National Association of Cement Users. The Work of the Committees This Committee on Concrete and Reinforced Concrete, as is well known, has been at work for nearly two years endeavoring to arrive at some definite conclusions on the important subjects entrusted to their care. It has been most fortunate in being able to secure, not only the co-operation of the leading colleges of the United States in its research investigations, but also the co-operation of the United States Advisory Board on Fuels and Structural Materials, which has a splendidly equipped laboratory at St. Louis. The importance of the work was recognized by the United States Government in a practical way by an appropriation of one hundred thousand dollars, for the purpose of carrying on the experiments required. The scope of the work is fully detailed in the report of the Sub Committee on Tests which, with its introductory matter, fully explains the field to be covered, the purpose of the investigations, and gives with great accuracy the subjects to be investigated in the line of concrete and reinforced concrete.
