Sweetness and Power

Sweetness and Power PDF Author: Sidney W. Mintz
Publisher: Penguin
ISBN: 1101666641
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 322

Book Description
A fascinating persuasive history of how sugar has shaped the world, from European colonies to our modern diets In this eye-opening study, Sidney Mintz shows how Europeans and Americans transformed sugar from a rare foreign luxury to a commonplace necessity of modern life, and how it changed the history of capitalism and industry. He discusses the production and consumption of sugar, and reveals how closely interwoven are sugar's origins as a "slave" crop grown in Europe's tropical colonies with is use first as an extravagant luxury for the aristocracy, then as a staple of the diet of the new industrial proletariat. Finally, he considers how sugar has altered work patterns, eating habits, and our diet in modern times. "Like sugar, Mintz is persuasive, and his detailed history is a real treat." -San Francisco Chronicle

How Trade Liberalization Affects a Sugar Dependent Community in Jamaica

How Trade Liberalization Affects a Sugar Dependent Community in Jamaica PDF Author: Donovan Stanberry
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3030893596
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 294

Book Description
Located within the plantation economy model of the “New World Group” of The University of the West Indies, this book explores how the changes in the European Union’s sugar regime impacted a sugar-dependent community in Jamaica. It details how the end of centuries of preferential treatment of Jamaican sugar in the British/European market in 2005 worsened the social and environmental realities of the Monymusk community in Clarendon, Jamaica, which depended on the sugar industry. In describing the response of the Jamaican Government to the changes in the EU Sugar Regime, and the subsequent roll-out of an EU funded adaptation strategy, the author provides some unique perspectives on this process, drawing on his experience as a senior civil servant involved in the process. The book also highlights the continued social and environmental impact on the area since 2015 . The book concludes with a discussion on the empirical findings and how those findings contribute to the debates on the dependency perpetuated by the Plantation Economy Model of development and the failure of neo-liberal influenced government policies, as well as the lack of imagination of post-independent governments to break this dependency and deliver on the promise of independence.

Sugarlandia Revisited

Sugarlandia Revisited PDF Author: Ulbe Bosma
Publisher: Berghahn Books
ISBN: 9781845453169
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 250

Book Description
Sugar was the single most valuable bulk commodity traded internationally before oil became the world's prime resource. From the sixteenth to the eighteenth century, cane sugar production was pre-eminent in the Atlantic Islands, the Caribbean, and Brazil. Subsequently, cane sugar industries in the Americas were transformed by a fusion of new and old forces of production, as the international sugar economy incorporated production areas in Asia, the Pacific, and Africa. Sugar's global economic importance and its intimate relationship with colonialism offer an important context for probing the nature of colonial societies. This book questions some major assumptions about the nexus between sugar production and colonial societies in the Caribbean and Southeast Asia, especially in the second (post-1800) colonial era.

ICUMSA Methods of Sugar Analysis

ICUMSA Methods of Sugar Analysis PDF Author: H. C. S. De Whalley
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 1483277984
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 167

Book Description
ICUMSA Methods of Sugar Analysis presents the recommendations of the International Commission for Uniform Methods of Sugar Analysis (ICUMSA) that are based on thorough investigations of methods likely to prove practical and appropriate for the sugar industry. This book discusses the procedures for raw sugar polarization. Organized into two parts encompassing 21 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the various methods of determining sucrose by polarimetry, including the invertase method and the Jackson and Grill's method. This text then examines the methods of determining reducing sugars, which depends on knowing the amount of cuprous oxide precipitated from Fehling's solution. Other chapters consider the method to be applied for all beet products. This book discusses as well the principle of double sulfation that is necessary to ensure conversion of ash to sulfate. The final chapter deals with the evaluation of filter aids. This book is a valuable resource for chemists.
