Excerpt from The Internal Secretions and the Principles of Medicine, Vol. 2 Gottschau31 Observed in histological preparations of the adrenals that protoplasmic masses projected from the medullary cells into the central vein of the organ, and that very slight pressure upon the latter would cause blood containing these masses to issue from it. They then assumed the aspect of bright, intensely refractive and colorless granules which, singly or in clumps of fifteen or twenty, were contained in the blood issuing from the organ. Manasse32 also noticed that hya line masses were secreted by rows of cells in the medullary canal of the adrenals and that they then passed into the ves sels of the latter. A similar observation was recorded by Auld,33 who refers to the secretion as a colloid. Stilling found the granules referred to by Gottschau not onlyin the cortical and medullary layers, but also in the tissue spaces. Pfaundler35 discovered similar granules in the lumina of the adrenal vessels and in the suprarenal vein where it opens into the vena cava. C. A when the data were not obtained. This rise was greatest in the first experiment on E. F. D. B., 37 per cent., and next greatest in the second experiment on the same subject, 31 per cent. It was least in the case of J. C. F 6 per cent. J. C. F. Likewise had the least rise in basal metabolism, but E. F. D. B. Did not have the greatest. This increase might have been merely the washing out of nitrogenous bodies as a result of the caffein diuresis. The Pulse Rate - This showed sometimes a slight rise, sometimes a slight fall, or else no change at all after the subject received the drug. Excerpt from The Principles of Medicine, Vol. 1 Medical teaching has been very crude and imperfect, in practical medicine, from the want of a proper systemization of facts, and the development from these of pathological and therapeutic laws. In place of this we have been presented with the theories of closet practitioners, and the vagaries of dreamers, who were always more persistent in making known their views than the modest toiler by the bedside of the sick, in the dea'-room, or in the laboratory. There has, however, been a great change in this regard within the last quarter of a century; and men now value the facts of observation more than the conclusions arrived at by reasoning from imperfect data. Thus, the practice of medicine has attained such development that it may he regarded as a science. Webster defines science to be "a collection of the general principles or leading truths relating to any subject, arranged in a systematic manner." In order, therefore, that the practice of medicine should he termed scientific, it is necessary that there he certain well-defined truths, and that these he so grouped together as to establish fixed principles. Many deny that there is any science in the practice of medicine, and only admit it in chemistry and anatomy, out of the seven branches taught in our colleges. Others, and among these our best writers, while claiming that medicine is a science, almost entirely ignore it in practice, and in writing, results are given as almost entirely or quite empirical. That practical medicine is an art to he studied, and perfected by continued practice, must he admitted, but I claim that there is an underlying scientific basis that needs to be known to give the greatest success. The empiric may have success, hut it is only after lie has generalized his observations. and formed in his own mind, certain definite principles. Every part of the heart is irritable, and every part answers to the normal stimulus with its own rhythm, but the irritability is developed in the highest degree in the venous part of the right auriele, and this most easily excitable part, whose own pulsations are more frequent than those of the ventricles, takes the lead of the other parts and determines the rate of their pulsations. So the venous part of the auriele forces its rhythm on the other parts of the auricles and on the ventricles with which it is connected.
