The United Nations

The United Nations PDF Author: Robert Edwon Riggs
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 388

Book Description
The United Nations is an upper-division analysis of the history, processes, structure, and functions of the United Nations. It is intended for courses on international organizations, usually titled The United Nations, International Organization, International Development, or Conflict Resolution. The most successful one-volume text on the United Nations in the academic marketplace, it provides a comprehensive treatment that is adaptable to a variety of course approaches. The third edition does not alter the organization of the previous editions; no less significant, the basic historical material that made up the core of the first two editions remains intact in this latest rendering. Nevertheless, the book has been revised from cover to cover, redrafted to reflect significant changes in the world after the Cold War and the effect of those changes on the character and work of the United Nations.

Strengths and Weaknesses of the United Nations

Strengths and Weaknesses of the United Nations PDF Author: Nikolas Eristavi
Publisher: GRIN Verlag
ISBN: 3640948149
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 14

Book Description
Seminar paper from the year 2010 in the subject Politics - Topic: International Organisations, grade: 90, LMU Munich, course: Introduction to International Politics, language: English, abstract: The now dissolved League of Nations was replaced when the United Nations Charter came into effect on October 24 in 1945. Five permanent member states signed onto the Security Council: China, France, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom and the United States. Their collective influence empowered the organization and gave it the legitimacy that the League of Nations lacked. The UN flowered thereafter as it became a catalyst for change in response to humanitarian crises and the propensity of war. Social services developed around the world thanks to the organization, and conflict resolution became a key facet of the intergovernmental agency. The United Nations in its current state is subject to much scrutiny. Despite its strength in its work in protecting and serving the needs of humanity and functioning as mediatory power for international conflict resolution, the UN does falter as a "world government" as it heralds little hegemony and is ineffective at being a progressive power.

The Management of Multilateral Organizations

The Management of Multilateral Organizations PDF Author: Dennis Dijkzeul
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9004632972
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 260

Book Description
In which ways do UN organizations carry out their multilateral development cooperation individually, as well as in cooperation with other organizations? This study answers this question from a public- management perspective. Such a perspective has rarely been used in the study of international organizations. In particular, the theoretical topics of governance, program management, and coordination in and among UN organizations are reviewed. More research on management may lead to adaptations within the UN system or information which will neutralize ill-founded criticism. An improved understanding of the internal functioning of UN organizations may enhance their efficiency and impact. Moreover, sometimes member states have such high expectations that the UN system cannot live up to them. In this way, UN members regulate their own disappointments with the UN system. A critical assessment of the limitations under which the UN organizations operate may prevent some of these high hopes and thus forestall some member state dissatisfaction. This study deals in particular with the United Nations Populations Fund (UNFPA) and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), and their coordinated behaviour in the Joint Consultative Group on Policy (JCGP). This work will interest and be useful for managers in multilateral organizations and academics studying the functioning of these organizations.

United Nations Protection of Humanity and Its Habitat

United Nations Protection of Humanity and Its Habitat PDF Author: Bertrand G. Ramcharan
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9004303146
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 300

Book Description
This book is a study of the future of international law as well as the future of the United Nations. It is the first study ever bringing together the laws, policies and practices of the UN for the protection of the earth, the oceans, outer space, human rights, victims of armed conflicts and of humanitarian emergencies, the poor, the vulnerable and the disadvantaged world-wide. It reviews unprecedented dangers and challenges facing humanity such as climate change and weapons of mass destruction, and argues that the international law of the future must become an international law of security and of protection. It submits that the concept of international security in the UN Charter can no longer be restricted to situations of armed conflict but must be given its natural meaning: whatever threatens the security of humanity. It calls for the Security Council to perform its role as the guardian of the security of humankind and sees a leadership role for the UN Secretary-General in analysing and presenting challenges of international security and protection to the Security Council for its attention. Written by a seasoned scholar / practitioner of international law and the United Nations, who has served in key policy, peacemaking, peacekeeping and human rights positions in the United Nations, this book offers indispensable new vistas of international law and policy, and the future role of the United Nations.
