Victor Gollancz

Victor Gollancz PDF Author: Ruth Dudley Edwards
Publisher: Faber & Faber
ISBN: 0571294804
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 712

Book Description
Victor Gollancz was a teacher, publisher, author and campaigner who spent his life passionately trying to make people see the truth as he saw it. If it's as a publisher that he is remembered above all, nonetheless in many ways he epitomised the social conscience of the mid-twentieth century: he founded the Left Book Club, Save Europe Now and the Campaign Against Capital Punishment. For this biography, first published in 1987, Ruth Dudley Edwards had access to all the Gollancz family and firm papers, and produced an honest, searching work which not only reveals an extraordinary man but throws light on many of the political and social events of his times. 'Frequently gripping and always readable.' John Gross, Observer 'Consistently enthralling and a brilliant achievement.' Hilary Rubinstein, Spectator 'One of the fullest and richest portraits of a contemporary individual we have had.' Anthony Curtis, Financial Times 'I would trust anyone's life to Ruth Dudley Edwards.' Terence De Vere White, Irish Times

G. D. H. Cole

G. D. H. Cole PDF Author: L. P. Carpenter
Publisher: CUP Archive
ISBN:
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 300

Book Description
A sensitive analysis of the thought and intellectual development of G. D. H. Cole (1889-1959) the distinguished Labour historian. Cole's career is traced from his earliest days in the Labour movement to his final years as Chichele Professor of Social and Political Thought at Oxford. Professor Carpenter examines Cole's role in the creation of Guild Socialism; his work in the early 1920s when after the decline of Guild Socialism, he turned towards the analysis of policies, research through the New Statesman and the New Fabian Research Bureau and teaching at Oxford; his attempts to provide a policy for the Left in the 1930s, the idea of economic planning and the Popular Front; his activities during the Second World War; and his place in the debates over the Labour movement's cause after the 1945 government. Finally Professor Carpenter discusses Cole's courageous recognition, towards the end of his life, that Socialism had not come and his attempts to start a new cycle of research in one of the first efforts to create a New Left.

The Emergence of the Welfare State in Britain and Germany

The Emergence of the Welfare State in Britain and Germany PDF Author: Wolfgang Mommsen
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 0429865678
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 592

Book Description
Originally published in 1981 The Emergence of the Welfare State in Britain and Germany 1850-1950 is an edited collection on the history and future prospects of the modern welfare state. It attempts to pave the way for an analysis of the problems of the welfare state and its historical origins, and the likely future that transcends the nation-state orientated historical accounts. This collection of essays seeks to promote an interdisciplinary approach to the problems of the welfare state in two industrial societies. So far historians and social scientists concerned with this field of research have tended to work in isolation from one another, without mutual exchange of knowledge and using different methods. This book attempts to give equal scope to both perspectives.

Public Governance and Strategic Management Capabilities

Public Governance and Strategic Management Capabilities PDF Author: Paul Joyce
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 1317405773
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 196

Book Description
This is a book about the modernization of public governance and the development of strategic states. It focuses on six Gulf countries (United Arab Emirates, Oman, Qatar, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait) and presents research findings from quantitative data analysis and comparative analysis of the trends and developments of the six Gulf states. The book analyses the workings of the governments of the Gulf States, including the way that they have tackled national development since the mid 1990s. This includes how their strategies for economic diversification have been reflected in trends in revenues from "oil rents" and whether they are still rentier states or not. Evidence is presented on key topics such as government strategies and long-term strategic visions. Careful consideration is given to reputational evidence and to the strategic process capabilities of the governments: integration and coordination of government machinery, mobilizing public and private stakeholders, evaluating, and adapting – all defined as strategic process capabilities. This examination of government is also used to study their performance in strategic results areas: the economy, the natural environment, and the happiness of their citizens. The countries emerge from this analysis as far from identical in terms of capabilities or in term of performance.
