The World of the Tavern
Author: Beat Kümin
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1351880276
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 261
Book Description
The subject of drink received a great deal of attention from early modern Europeans. Preachers, physicians, authorities, artists and travellers all addressed it from a range of different perspectives. At the same time, inns, taverns and alehouses served as multifunctional centres in towns and villages throughout Europe. This combination resulted in a wealth of sources, both institutional and cultural, which are only now beginning to be explored. This anthology features new research on public houses in England, Russia and the German lands. In a series of general, thematic and regional studies, contributors engage with broader debates in early modern history, shedding light on such key issues as consumption, travel and communication, state building, confessional identity, fiscal practice, gender and household relations, and the use of public spaces. The result is a volume that should appeal to anybody with an interest in early modern cultural history.

The Epistle to the Hebrews
Author: David J. Garrard
Publisher: Wipf and Stock Publishers
ISBN: 1666775932
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 321
Book Description
The author to the Hebrews tells us that in the past God spoke through the prophets but now he has spoken through the Son: Jesus. The message transmitted is now complete and clear. The entire letter is concerned with the superiority of this new covenant of the Son. It is better in every way when compared with Sinai’s rules and regulations as it is now no longer based on shadows of the heavenly reality but the reality itself. There can be no going back to the former, since all is better—including the promises, the priesthood, and the relationship with the Father through the Son. He shares the heavenly throne with the Father and is our unique intercessor. His new covenant means that there is no need for any other mediator, and the Holy Spirit’s power enables a complete forgiveness of sin for all who persevere and give themselves to following the purposes of God with passionate faith. However, experiences of the past do not guarantee the future, and there is a race to be run, which means that passion and purpose are required on an ongoing basis.
