Religion and spirituality can serve both as source of comfort and struggle (Exline, 2013; Exline & Rose, 2013). The positive effects of religion and spirituality on people's mental and physical health are well established (Koenig, King, & Carson, 2012), and in the past decade, scholarly interest in religious and spiritual (R/S) struggles has increased. Several studies have demonstrated that R/S struggles are linked with various indicators of psychological adjustment (e.g., psychological distress, depressive and anxious symptoms) and spiritual adjustment (e.g., instability in perceived relationship to God and authoritarian God representations; Exline, 2013; Exline & Rose, 2013). However, gaps remain in the literature on R/S struggles. The vast majority of studies are cross-sectional, highlighting the need for longitudinal studies. Furthermore, although many of the existing studies focus on R/S struggles among college students, to date no studies have focused exclusively on R/S struggles among college students at Christian institutions. The current longitudinal study investigated R/S struggles of undergraduate students at Wheaton College (IL), a prototypical member of the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities. Results indicated that among Wheaton undergraduates, R/S struggles are positively related to depressive symptoms, anxiety symptoms, and authoritarian God representations, and they are negatively related to spiritual adjustment and benevolent God representations. Multiple regression analyses revealed these psychological and spiritual variables collectively predict concurrent and subsequent R/S struggles (R2 = 39% and 23%, respectively). Hierarchical regression analyses demonstrated psychological variables more robustly predict concurrent and subsequent R /S struggles relative to spiritual variables, even though spiritual variables still predict concurrent (but not subsequent) R/S struggles. Lastly, one-way ANOVAs revealed that Wheaton undergraduates with chronic R/S struggles report significantly lower overall adjustment, lower spiritual adjustment, and higher depressive symptoms, relative to Wheaton undergraduates with no, resolved, or new R/S struggles. The findings provide further clarity on the R/S lives of emerging adults and offer insight into the R/S struggles of students at Christian colleges and universities. The current study examined the role of God attachment as a mediator of the relationship between religiosity and psychological adjustment and of the relationship between spirituality and psychological adjustment in a sample of young adults. Undergraduate psychology students completed questionnaires that assessed each of these variables. The study included participants of all faiths as well as atheists and agnostics. Structural equation modeling was used to analyze the fit of the proposed model to the data collected. Two separate analyses were conducted: one set of analyses with atheists and agnostics included and another set with them excluded. Results based on all of the participants indicated a poor fit of the model to the data. Once atheists and agnostics were removed from the sample, there was a mediocre fit of the model to the data. An exploratory factor analysis was conducted to determine whether the different types of religiosity: intrinsic, extrinsic, and quest subscales loaded onto the same factor as the spirituality subscales. The religiosity and spirituality subscales were subjected to a principal component analysis, followed by a varimax rotation. Results indicated that the intrinsic and extrinsic religiosity subscales and the spirituality subscales loaded onto one factor (Connection with the Divine), while quest subscales loaded onto a second factor (Quest). Finally, a one-way ANOVA found significant ethnic differences on the intrinsic and quest doubt religiosity scales, all of the spirituality scales, and all of the God attachment measures. The results of this study show that even though the model was not a close fit, young adults in this sample appear to be exploring their religious and spiritual beliefs as their means on the intrinsic, extrinsic, quest doubt, and quest tentativeness subscales were higher than comparable groups. This is congruent with the developmental task of identity formation during this period of life. Because young adults are also concerned with vocational choices, college life, friendships, and dating, they appear to have separated their religious and spiritual lives from their psychological well-being. Also, African-Americans in this sample were more religious, spiritual, and have a more secure attachment to God than Caucasians. If a client expresses the importance of these variables to his/her presenting problem, they may be important, useful mechanisms for mental health professionals to consider in treatment. Finally, quest does not seem to be a type of religiosity, rather it is different from religiosity and spirituality.

As school psychologists strive to become culturally competent in our growing diverse society, an important piece that seems to missing from the typically accessed conceptualization of culture is religion and spirituality. The focus of this study was to survey NASP approved training programs to determine how these programs intentionally incorporate knowledge and skills and determine the competence of their graduate students in matters of religion and spirituality. All NASP approved school psychology programs were sent a survey and the program director served as the sole participant. Most programs do not believe that their students have been involved in casework involving religion/spirituality. Further, most programs do not offer a course or embed a course with information regarding religion/spirituality. However, other participants offered great examples of casework and courses that have involved spirituality and religion. More than half of the participants believe their students are competent in concepts of school psychology involving spirituality and religion. Also, many participants offered their definition of religious/spiritual competence in school psychology. Using the definitions offered by the participants, a definition about religious/spiritual competence was synthesized. It is hoped the examples given by the participants for casework and courses, and the definition created from participant responses can be used by training programs to incorporate spiritual and religious information into coursework.
