Book Description
Tensile tests were carried out on uniaxially oriented films of several amorphous linear polymers, i.e., polymethyl methacrylate, polystyrene, and poly-2, 2'-octamethylene-5, 5'-dibenzimidazole of different molecular weights. In the range of relatively high molecular weights, the latter were shown to have no direct effect on the mechanical properties of isotropic and oriented polymers. The mechanical properties were determined by the network structure formed during the extension, and by the average degree of orientation of the macromolecular mers. It was concluded that the formation of a particular structure is closely related to the molecular weight of a polymer, and that a given molecular weight can promote or hinder the formation of the corresponding structure under given extension conditions. Structure and Properties of Oriented Polymers

Structure and Properties of Oriented Polymers PDF Author: Ian M. Ward

Book Description
The first edition was produced at a time when the advantages of studying oriented polymers were just becoming apparent. From a sci entific stand point it had been demonstrated that greater insight into both structure and properties could be obtained if an oriented polymer was prepared. From a technological viewpoint, major advances were under way, especially in high modulus and high strength fibres. Twenty years later, it is possible to review the scientific advances which have been made in this area and to provide much wider perspectives for the technology. As in the case of the first edition, the emphasis is on the methodologies available for characterizing oriented polymers and their mechanical behaviour. It is a particular pleasure to thank the contributing authors for their cooperation and Dr Philip Hastings of Chapman & Hall for his support and encouragement. I am also indebted to Professors A. H. Windle and D. C. Bassett for their respective contributions to sections 1. 3. 1 and 1. 3. 4. Although this chapter has been extensively revised, the contribution of the late Leslie Holliday to the first edition of this book is also acknowledged. Introduction 1 I. M. Ward 1. 1 THE PHENOMENON OF ORIENTATION Orientation in polymers is a phenomenon of great technical and theo retical importance. The word orientation itself conveys a number of ideas.

Oriented Polymer Materials

Oriented Polymer Materials PDF Author: Stoyko Fakirov
Publisher: Wepf
ISBN:
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 542

Book Description
Updates materials and polymer scientists on developments during the ten years since the previous book devoted to the subject. Provides information on the orientation of macromolecules that largely determines the mechanical properties of polymer materials, as well as on several of specific materials. Of particular interest are the largely review articles by two Russian contributors offering access to research that has not been available in the west for many decades. Among the topics are problems of the physics of the oriented state of polymers, x-ray diffraction by quasi-periodic polymer structures, morphology in oriented semi-crystalline polymers, polarized light scattering from polymer textures, and the nature of the crystalline and amorphous phases in oriented polymers and their influence on physical properties. The Physics of Glassy Polymers

The Physics of Glassy Polymers PDF Author: R. N. Haward
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9401023557
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 635

Book Description
This work sets out to provide an up-to-date account of the physical properties and structure of polymers in the glassy state. Properties measured above the glass transition temperature are therefore included only in so far as is necessary for the treatment of the glass transition process. This approach to the subject therefore excludes any detailed account of rubber elasticity or melt rheology or of the structure and conformation of the long chain molecule in solution, although knowledge derived from this field is assumed where required. Major emphasis is placed on structural and mechanical properties, although a number of other physical properties are included. Naturally the different authors contributing to the book write mainly from their own particular points of view and where there are several widely accepted theoretical approaches to a subject, these are sometimes provided in different chapters which will necessarily overlap to a significant extent. For example, the main theoretical presentation on the subject of glass transition is given in Chapter 1. This is supplemented by accounts of the free volume theory in Chapter 3 and in the Introduction, and a short account of the work of Gibbs and DiMarzio, also in Chapter 3. Similarly, there is material on solvent cracking in Chapters 7 and 9, though the two workers approach the subject from opposite directions. Every effort has therefore been made to encourage cross-referencing between different chapters.

Book Description
During the First Conference of European Rheologists, which was held in Graz, Austria, in April 1982, the Provisional Committee of European Delegates to the Inter national Committee on Rheology held a meeting to discuss future European activities in the general area of rheol ogy. It was agreed, among other things, that the organ ization of meetings in Europe on specific topics related to rheology would be done in cooperation, so as to avoid conflicts of dates and/or subject areas. Any such meeting, if approved by the Provisional Committee, would be named a European Meeting; the European Societies of Rheology would help the organizers with distribution 6f circulars, membership lists, and any required technical assistance. One of the very first meetings organized within this procedural scheme has been the European Meeting on Polymer Processing and Properties, which was held in Capri, Italy, on June 13-16, 1983. This book constitutes the Proceedings of that meeting.
