Book Description
The Army Materials and Mechanics Research Center in coop eration with the Materials Science Group of the Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science of Syracuse University has been conducting the Annual Sagamore Army Materials Research Conference since 1954. The specific purpose of these conferences has been to bring together scientists and engineers from academic institutions, industry and government who are uniquely qualified to explore in depth a subject of importance to the Department of Defense, the Army and the scientific community. These proceedings entitled, FATIGUE - ENVIRONMENT AND TEMPER ATURE EFFECT, address the overview of temperature and environmental effects of fatigue, room temperature environmental effects, high temperature and environmental effect - mechanisms, high tempera ture and environmental effect - mechanisms, materials and design-engineering applications. We wish to acknowledge the assistance of Messrs. Joseph Bernier and Dan McNaught of the Army Materials and Mechanics Research Center and Helen Brown DeMascio of Syracuse University throughout the stages of the conference planning and finally the publication of the book. The continued active interest and support of these conferences by Dr. E. Wright, Director of the Army Materials and Mechanics Research Center, is appreciated.

Environmental Effects on Fatigue Behavior of Metals

Environmental Effects on Fatigue Behavior of Metals PDF Author:
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 33

Book Description
Advances in our knowledge of the influence of environment on fatigue properties in recent years are reviewed. Much of this has occurred as a result of increased activity in development of water and gas nuclear reactors, heat transfer systems, and offshore structures. Effects of both aqueous and gaseous environments on crack initiation and propagation as well as fatigue life in principally steels, aluminum alloys, and titanium alloys are discussed including the role of environmental factors such as electrochemical potential, solution chemistry, gaseous species, and temperature. Mechanical factors such as frequency and loading waveform are also important in the response of material behavior to environment. (Author).

Fatigue of Materials and Structures

Fatigue of Materials and Structures PDF Author: Claude Bathias
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1118623371
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 415

Book Description
The design of mechanical structures with improved and predictable durability cannot be achieved without a thorough understanding of the mechanisms of fatigue damage and more specifically the relationships between the microstructure of materials and their fatigue properties. Written by leading experts in the field, this book (which is complementary to Fatigue of Materials and Structures: Application to Damage and Design, also edited by Claude Bathias and André Pineau), provides an authoritative, comprehensive and unified treatment of the mechanics and micromechanisms of fatigue in metals, polymers and composites. Each chapter is devoted to one of the major classes of materials or to different types of fatigue damage, thereby providing overall coverage of the field. The book deals with crack initiation, crack growth, low-cycle fatigue, gigacycle fatigue, shorts cracks, fatigue micromechanisms and the local approach to fatigue damage, corrosion fatigue, environmental effects and variable amplitude loadings, and will be an important and much used reference for students, practicing engineers and researchers studying fracture and fatigue in numerous areas of mechanical, structural, civil, design, nuclear, and aerospace engineering as well as materials science.
