On the Motive of the Incarnation PDF Author: The Salmanticenses

Book Description
The Catholic University of America Press is pleased to announce a new series, Early Modern Catholic Sources, edited by Ulrich L. Lehner and Trent Pomplun. This series – the only one of its kind – will provide translations of early modern Catholic texts of theological interest written between 1450 and 1800. The first volume in this series is On the Motive of the Incarnation, the first English translation of the seventeenth-century Discalced Carmelites at the University of Salmanca treatise on the motive of the Incarnation. Originally intended for students of their order, it became a major contribution to broader theological discourse. In this treatise, they defend the assertion that God intended Christ’s Incarnation essentially as a remedy for sin, such that if Adam had not sinned Christ would not have become incarnate, and that, at the same time, God intended all other works of nature and grace for the sake of Christ at their end. The Salmanticenses’ position thus combines elements of the Franciscan and Dominican traditions, stemming from the thought of Blessed John Duns Scotus and Saint Thomas Aquinas. This treatise is an exhaustive effort to show how the Scotistic emphasis on the primacy of Christ as the first willed and intended by God can be articulated within a Thomistic framework that acknowledges the contingency of the Incarnation on the need for redemption. In addition to the translation, the volume will include a brief introduction and extensive notes for theologians, historians, and students.

Lange’s Commentary of the Holy Scriptures

Lange’s Commentary of the Holy Scriptures PDF Author: Johann Peter Lange
Publisher: Christian Classics Reproductions
ISBN:
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 1384

Book Description
he original 63 volumes set are now reduced to 9 volumes. We have completed volumes 1, 6-9 which are the New Testament. Lord willing during 2023-2024, we will try to complete volumes 2-5 which are the Old Testament. This volume was published between 1867-1874 In contrast to the extreme skeptical-critical mode which came to characterize much of German scholarship in the 19th century, Lange represented a more traditional-conservative (and Evangelical) approach, shared in common with men such as E. W. Hengstenberg. He was also a (Reformed) minister, and the Commentaries reflect this combination of conservative criticism, Evangelical theology, and homiletics, in a way that is unique. For each passage that is covered, a consistent approach is adopted throughout. After giving the text in translation, along with textual notes, (as footnotes), three different kinds of commentary are presented: · EXEGETICAL AND CRITICAL · DOCTRINAL AND ETHICAL · HOMILETICAL AND PRACTICAL This gives you three times the value! For each verse you select, a drop-down box will appear allowing you to choose from each of these areas or kinds of commentary. For detailed analysis, go to the exegetical-critical notes; for sermon ideas and pastoral insights, select the Homiletical notes.

Explorations in Analytic Ecclesiology

Explorations in Analytic Ecclesiology PDF Author: Joshua Cockayne
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0192844601
Category : Church
Languages : en
Pages : 227

Book Description
Explorations in Analytic Ecclesiology proposes an account of the nature and practice of the Church that draws from work in contemporary analytic social metaphysics, social epistemology, and social ethics. In the first book-length study of ecclesiology in analytic theology, Joshua Cockayne offers a vision of the Church, according to which the Church is united as the body of Christ through the work of the Holy Spirit, despite the apparent diversity of the Church in its gathered, particular forms. This account of the oneness of the Church in and through the work of the persons of the Trinity is then applied to explore the nature of baptism, the eucharist, and liturgy.
