Antonio Buero-Vallejo

Antonio Buero-Vallejo PDF Author: Antonio Buero Vallejo

Pages : 328

Book Description
"This masterful translation of four tragedies by Antonio Buero-Vallejo (1916-2000), Spain's most important dramatist since the 1930s, allows English-speaking audiences to experience the most deeply moving and intellectually rich works by one of the twentieth century's great authors. Patricia W. O'Connor complements vivid translations with generous supporting materials, including a reader-friendly introduction to the playwright's life and work, commentaries on the plays, and photographs of productions and playwright." "Buero-Vallejo's emblematic first play, Story of a Stairway (1949), chronicling decades in the lives of struggling Madrid families, catapulted the young author into prominence. Appearing here for the first time in English, Before Dawn (1953) is a whodunit and the riveting odyssey of one woman 's search for truth that recalls Greek tragedy. The Basement Window (1967), an Orwellian science-fiction experiment, portrays the moral climate of the late twentieth century as judged by ethically enlightened researchers of a distant future. In the first English translation of the author's poignantly relevant final play, Mission to the Deserted Village (1999), a wartime attempt to save an El Greco painting raises questions about how much of its own treasure a culture will destroy to keep it out of enemy hands." "Readers who know Buero-Vallejo's plays will celebrate O'Connor's sparkling translations. Those who haven't yet read Buero-Vallejo will find a very moving introduction in this collection."--BOOK JACKET.

Spanish Film, Theatre and Literature in the Twentieth Century : Essays in Honour of Derek Gagen PDF Author: David John George
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 360

Book Description
This collection of valuable new studies explores major figures in twentieth-century Spanish culture such as Antonio Machado, Rafael Alberti, Federico García Lorca, and Luis Buñuel, offering a fresh and engaging interpretation of their artistic works. The inclusion of less-familiar subjects has wider ramifications: the translation of one of Santiago Rusiñol's plays informs a discussion on censorship and a Catalan novel by Llorenç Villalonga relates to a much larger discussion of European nationalist thought. While some contributors adopt feminist, psychoanalytical, or philosophical approaches, the focus throughout is on understanding Spanish culture within its historical and social context.

Fables of Development: Capitalism and Social Imaginaries in Spain (1950-1967)

Fables of Development: Capitalism and Social Imaginaries in Spain (1950-1967) PDF Author: Ana Fernandez-Cebrian
Publisher: Liverpool University Press
ISBN: 1802076417
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 224

Book Description
Fables of Development: Capitalism and Social Imaginaries in Spain (1950-1967) focuses on a basic paradox: why is it that the so-called “Spanish economic miracle” —a purportedly secular, rational, and technocratic process— was fictionally portrayed through providential narratives in which supernatural and extraordinary elements were often involved? In order to answer this question, this book examines cultural fictions and social life at the time when Spain turned from autarchy to the project of industrial and tourist development. Beyond the narratives about progress, modernity, and consumer satisfaction on a global and national level, the cultural archives of the period offer intellectual findings about the expectations of a social majority who lived in the precariousness and who did not have sufficient income to acquire the consumer goods that were advertised. Through the scrutiny of interdisciplinary archives (literary texts, cinema, newsreels, comics, and journalistic sources, among other cultural artifacts), each chapter offers an analysis of the social imaginaries about the circulation and distribution of capital and resources in the period from 1950, when General Franco’s government began to integrate into international markets and institutions following its agreements with the United States, to 1967, when the implementation of the First Development Plan (1964-1967) was completed.
