GENDER AND DECENTRALIZATION

GENDER AND DECENTRALIZATION PDF Author: Simi Afonja & Monica Alagbile

Category : Biography & Autobiography

Pages : 152

Book Description
GENDER & DECENTRALISATION Gender and Decentralization in Nigeria is a product of two years’ research sponsored by the Gender Unit of the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), Canada, as part of its Gender and Decentralization Program for sub-Saharan Africa. The overall objective of the program was to document and analyze specific state decentralization reforms that have worked to promote women’s rights, and/or reforms that have created barriers to the protection and realization of these rights. At the core of the Nigerian project were women’s representation and political effectiveness in local administration. The issues transcended the usual structural analysis of the political, administrative and fiscal changes associated with decentralization and a breakdown by gender. Given the centrality of equity and accountability issues in current good governance debates, a feminist perspective on voice and action was inserted into the traditional public administration perspective. Going beyond numbers, description of gender inequitable electioneering processes, poor accountability of the state, of political parties and the women’s constituency, the book also focusses on feminist political activism at the grassroots level. The authors also document the potential impact of re-politicizing civil society, and restructuring of gender ideologies to achieve self determination and increase women representation and political effectiveness.

Yoruba Hometowns

Yoruba Hometowns PDF Author: Lillian Trager
Publisher: Lynne Rienner Publishers
ISBN: 9781555879815
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 316

Book Description
The pattern of migrants maintaining strong ties with their home communities is particularly common in sub-Saharan Africa, where it has important social, cultural, political, and economic implications. This book explores the significance of hometown connections for civil society and local development in Nigeria. Rich ethnographic description and case studies illustrate the links that the Ijesa Yoruba maintain with their communities of origin - links that both help to shape social identity and contribute to local development. Trager also examines indigenous concepts of development, demonstrating how the Yoruba bring their understandings of development to efforts in their own communities. Placing her work in the context of national political and economic change, she raises questions about the motivations, implications, and consequences of local development efforts, not only for the communities and their members, but also for the larger polity.

The Changing Forms of Identity Politics in Nigeria Under Economic Adjustment

The Changing Forms of Identity Politics in Nigeria Under Economic Adjustment PDF Author: Cyril I. Obi

Book Description
"The Niger delta region of Nigeria which is at the heart of the country's oil industry, has a long history of struggles for self-determination dating back to the early years of the 20[superscript th] century. In the 1980s and 1990s, these struggles, unfolding as they did within the context of military authoritarianism and structural adjustment, took the form of widespread agitation for greater control by local communities of the revenues accruing to the Nigerian state from exploration and extraction of oil." "This study attempts to capture the transformations in ethnic minority identity politics in the oil-producing areas of the Niger delta. In doing this, attention is simultaneously drawn to the factors informing the shift from peaceful agitation to violent protest as well as the dynamic of decay and renewal in the various ethnic minority movements that are active in the delta. It is suggested that part of the solution to the crisis in the delta will involve not only a thorough-going restructuring of the Nigerian state but also the re-orientation of the mode of operation of the giant oil multinationals in order to make them both more sensitive and accountable to the local communities."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
