Book Description
This research and policy book examines the role of women in the military and the overwhelming evidence to date that warranted repealing the combat exclusion policy. It explores the following questions: How can the success of women in the military serve as justification for its repeal? What will be the potential impact of repealing the policy on the recruitment, promotion and retention of women in the military? How will repealing the combat exclusion policy change the ways in which military men relate to military women? How can repealing the policy set women on the course toward full agency and representation as full citizens in American society at large? Not only will this book help in filling the gaps of the existing literature of public administration and public policy about women in the military but it will provide the personal insights of women who have served under the combat exclusion policy.

Women Veterans

Women Veterans PDF Author: G.L.A. Harris
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1351201131
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 422

Book Description
Women who fight in wars also have to fight for their right to do so. But what are the obstacles impeding their progress in achieving equal status as both active service members and as veterans? This book, written by a team of female veterans and military scholars, demonstrates the ways in which women service members and veterans experience a unique set of challenges when attempting to both honorably serve their country and reintegrate into civilian society following military service. These challenges include – but are not limited to – discrimination, staggering rates of suicide, and barriers to obtaining treatment for military sexual trauma and other critical benefits through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Women Veterans: Lifting the Veil of Invisibility examines current service-related policies and gender in the military’s hierarchical power structure. Here, a confluence of white male privilege and entitlement, the culture of domination, and the effeminization of the enemy manifest themselves as a backlash against women, calling into question a woman’s agency and her very status as a citizen. Special attention in the book is paid to the civil-military divide, representative bureaucracy, and the function of the military and civilian justice systems. Moreover, the need for appropriate healthcare policies and structures is examined within a ‘wicked problems’ framework. The authors conclude that the responsibility for women veterans, and all veterans for that matter, must become a matter of compelling government interest. This ground-breaking book is required reading for practitioners of public policy and administration with an interest in military and veterans affairs, public health, NGOs and activist groups, as well as scholars of gender and public service, public personnel management, and nonprofit management.

The Role of Trust in Leadership

The Role of Trust in Leadership PDF Author: Jamiel Vadell

Book Description
Trust continues to be a leading concept in organizational commitment. Milligan (2003) conducted a survey looking at trust in the Air Force among junior officers. This study was conducted as a follow-up study to determine whether trust continues to be an issue in the Air Force. The purpose of this study is to measure the comparative strengths and weaknesses, as well as the significance, of leadership s ability to gain trust from its subordinates in order to reduce the numbers of officers leaving after their commitment. This research measures organizational commitment and trust in a random sample of 372 Air Force captains. All participants completed the following surveys: The Management Behavior Climate Assessment, Organizational Commitment Scales, Intent to Leave Scale, and a demographics survey. Findings of the research concluded with the following points, as trust is a growing factor in leadership and junior officers leaving the Air Force, there is a relationship between trust and commitment. There is also a strong relationship between commitment and intent of junior officers leaving the Air Force. Finally, trust was the primary variable in this study and it was found that with an increase of trust in leadership, there is a decrease of junior officers leaving the Air Force.

An Investigation of the Effects of Pay Inequity, Organizational Commitment, and Job Satisfaction on Career Intent

An Investigation of the Effects of Pay Inequity, Organizational Commitment, and Job Satisfaction on Career Intent PDF Author: James D. Baughman

Pages : 103

Book Description
Retention of United States Air Force (USAF) middle managers has been identified as a problem. One solution of this problem currently under consideration is to increase military members' monetary compensation. This thesis developed the concept of pay inequity between military and civilian monetary compensation and investigated how pay inequity combined with job satisfaction and organizational commitment to predict career intent. In order to gather data for this investigation, a survey was administered to active duty USAF personnel at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, during the summer of 1982. Results indicated that pay inequity and job satisfaction did not contribute to career intent in the presence of organizational commitment. However, organizational commitment and five other factors did contribute to career intent. The other factors found to contribute to career intent were time in service, future career mobility, sex, the perceived opportunity for a civilian job which offered more enjoyment than the USAF job, and age. Limitations of these results are discussed. Recommendations for further research and use of these results are presented. (Author).

Organizational Commitment in the Military

Organizational Commitment in the Military PDF Author: Paul A. Gade

Book Description
Most military researchers who have attempted to measure organizational commitment have done so on an ad hoc basis, preferring to invent new items and scales rather than incorporate well-established measures. The purpose of this special issue is to reverse this trend by bringing military organizational commitment research into the scientific mainstream and to do so in ways that will prove useful to military services while advancing organizational commitment theory and knowledge. This special issue grew out of a symposium conducted at the 1998 American Psychological Association Convention that arose when many in the field recognized the practical importance of measuring organizational commitment while maintaining a healthy concern for ensuring that this measurement was well-grounded in organizational commitment theory. Taken together, the articles in this issue demonstrate the concepts of affective and continuance commitment and their underlying measures by using them in different military samples and under a variety operational conditions.
