Book Description
Bachelor Thesis from the year 2020 in the subject Economics - Foreign Trade Theory, Trade Policy, grade: 2,0, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (Chair of International Finance), course: Bachelorseminar: Trade Policy: Topics in Trade Policy, language: English, abstract: Over the last twenty years South Korea has signed several free trade agreements, including one with the U.S. in 2007 and one with the E.U. in 2010, which include tariff reductions. This thesis examines the impact of tariff reductions through free trade agreements on the value of imports of a single product representative for the agricultural sector through several regression analyses using a Poisson pseudo maximum likelihood estimator. Besides the two exporters of interest, the European Union and the United States, Canada, Mexico, Chile and Australia complement the data set as reference value. This study starts with a literature review on existing literature on the two free trade agreements and the effects of free trade on the agricultural economy. In chapter three an independent investigation is conducted explaining the background to the two free trade agreements and, more generally, the effects of trade liberalization on the agricultural sector. The following chapter describes the course of the investigation with the explanation of the operational variables and the data using descriptive statistics. The data is used in an estimation model to evaluate the effect of a reduction of tariff rates according to an agreement on the value of imports. The individual components of the estimation model are explained in more detail, followed by a presentation of the results of the estimation using the STATA statistics program. The last chapter concludes the whole investigation, together with considerations on possible further studies of this topic.

The Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) Negotiations and Issues for Congress
Author: Congressional Research Congressional Research Service
Publisher: Createspace Independent Publishing Platform
ISBN: 9781512309829
Category : Foreign trade regulation
Languages : en
Pages : 0
Book Description
The Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) is a proposed regional free trade agreement (FTA) being negotiated among the United States, Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, and Vietnam. U.S. negotiators and others describe and envision the TPP as a "comprehensive and high-standard" FTA that aims to liberalize trade in nearly all goods and services and include rules-based commitments beyond those currently established in the World Trade Organization (WTO). The broad outline of an agreement was announced on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) ministerial in November 2011, in Honolulu, HI. If concluded as envisioned, the TPP potentially could eliminate tariff and nontariff barriers to trade and investment among the parties and could serve as a template for a future trade pact among APEC members and potentially other countries. Congress has a direct interest in the negotiations, both through influencing U.S. negotiating positions with the executive branch, and by considering legislation to implement any resulting agreement.

Regional Trade Agreements and the Multilateral Trading System
Author: Rohini Acharya
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1107161649
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 753
Book Description
This volume contains a collection of studies examining trade-related issues negotiated in regional trade agreements (RTAs) and how RTAs are related to the WTO's rules. While previous work has focused on subsets of RTAs, these studies are based on what is probably the largest dataset used to date, and highlight key issues that have been negotiated in all RTAs notified to the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) and the World Trade Organization (WTO). New rules within RTAs are compared to rules agreed upon by WTO members. The extent of their divergences and the potential implications for parties to RTAs, as well as for WTO members that are not parties to RTAs, are examined. This volume makes an important contribution to the current debate on the role of the WTO in regulating international trade and how WTO rules relate to new rules being developed by RTAs.

Australia, the European Union and the New Trade Agenda
Author: Annmarie Elijah
Publisher: ANU Press
ISBN: 1760461148
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 299
Book Description
Australia (together with New Zealand) is one of the few Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries with which the EU does not have a comprehensive trade agreement. Australia and the EU are entering a new phase in the bilateral relationship, and the push towards a potential trade agreement has been steadily gaining momentum. This collection brings together diverse and deeply practical contributions to the forthcoming policy debate on the Australia–EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA), highlighting potential points of difficulty and possible gains from the agreement. This book makes two further contributions: it adds to the body of work reappraising the contemporary Australia–EU relationship; and provides a snapshot of current issues in trade policy—the ‘new trade agenda’—which is more complex and politically visible than ever. The issues confronting Australia and the EU in forthcoming negotiations are those confronting policy makers around the globe. They are testing public tolerance of decisions once viewed as dull and technocratic, and are redefining the academic treatment of trade policy. ‘… this book is especially important because it is talking about a very different type of trade agreement than the ones Australia has concluded recently with our major trading partners in East Asia. An agreement with the EU inevitably will focus on issues like services, investment, government procurement, and competition policy. These are major issues in their own right, are key parts of the new trade agenda, and are critical to Australia’s successful transition to a prosperous post–mining boom economy. In the absence of generalisable unilateral economic reform in this country, trade policy hopefully will provide an external source of pressure for reform. If this book adds to that pressure while also suggesting some of the tools needed for reform, it will have made a major contribution.’ Dr Mike Adams, Partner, Trading Nation Consulting

China's Volatile Pork Industry
Author: Fred Gale

ISBN: 9781477651032
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 30
Book Description
With China's emergence as a new source of potential demand for U.S.pork exports, it is important for U.S.farmers, business leaders, and policymakers to understand the volatile nature of China's pork industry. Prices, hog inventories, and pork output in China fluctuate from year to year in response to various factors that influence the market, and China's imports of pork tend to rise when Chinese hog prices are high. Extensive policy intervention by the Chinese government has contributed to consolidation in the country's pork industry but has not stabilized the market. Imported pork is becoming more competitive in China as Chinese pork production costs rise and animal disease outbreaks, environmental threats, and food safety concerns constrain growth of China's hog industry.

Bilateral and Regional Trade Agreements
Author: Simon Nicholas Lester
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781107613126
Category : Commercial treaties
Languages : en
Pages : 0
Book Description
The history of the world trading system and international trade agreements is characterised by shifts between bilateralism, regionalism and multilateralism. Bilateralism has recently returned, having gained momentum following the failed WTO negotiations at the 1999 Seattle Ministerial Conference. The result is that today's international trade rules are now a complex web of instruments and agreements. This volume contains case studies of selected bilateral and regional free trade agreements (FTAs), covering a wide range of countries, regions and key issues such as intellectual property and agriculture. Authored by leading scholars, practitioners and governmental officials, each case study provides a comprehensive review of the negotiating history and result of the selected agreement. Each study can serve as an in-depth examination of a particular FTA, and the group of case studies can be used to compare and contrast the coverage of different FTAs or to examine the FTAs signed by a particular country.
