The purpose for this thesis study was to gain information and knowledge regarding how the complex trauma of child abuse impacts brain development which influences learning and behavior in children in an elementary school setting. The research for this project concentrated on the four main information areas of: 1) what constitutes complex trauma, 2) how child abuse is defined and what is its connection to complex trauma, 3) what are the physiological effects of complex trauma in brain development and function, and 4) how do these effects affect a child's learning and behavioral growth in a school setting. Distinguishing factors between complex trauma and simple trauma were examined. The review of literature concentrated on child abuse since this is the most common type of trauma experienced by children in the United States. Effects of childhood abuse on brain development and function were explained, and selective structures and systems of the brain, such as the thalamus, hippocampus, limbic, autonomic nervous system, and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) were presented in Chapter Two. Relationships between abuse, complex trauma, and function of the brain were discussed, along with how these interactions can affect a child's interpersonal growth, learning ability, and behavioral development. Chapter Two's review of literature was presented in a synthesis approach with a summarization of the pertinent material in an educator accessible style. Chapter Three presented a means for providing educators with an understanding of how the results of abuse can affect brain development and how this information can assist them in helping a traumatized child in the school setting. A school personnel training model was proposed and enhanced with further information in the form of charts, diagrams, and other illustrative materials. This is followed by a conclusion, synthesizing and summarizing the information presented including suggestions for areas of further study.
