The mission of the United States Naval Academy speaks clearly of three pillars of midshipman development: moral, mental, and physical. Each is equally important; however, the mission of the Naval Academy to develop midshipmen physically is often overlooked. This thesis investigates the advantages and disadvantages of the varsity sports programs of the Naval Academy to provide more accurate and detailed information to policy makers regarding the importance of athletics. Specifically, this study analyzes the role of achievement in varsity athletics on fleet performance. Using data on the Naval Academy classes of 1981-1985, six multivariate models are specified. The first analyzes variables identified in previous studies as being significant in explaining performance or promotion, and is used as a baseline for the remaining models. The second model analyzes the overall effect of athletic achievement on promotion. The next model analyzes the differential effects of achievement in a team sport versus an individual sport versus no sport at all. The effects of being a female athlete and minority athlete are then identified, followed by an analysis of blue-chip athletes. The results find that four of the variables indicating athletic achievement have positive and significant effects on promotion to LCDR. Being a Blue-chip team athlete increased the probability of promotion 18.9 percent, being a Team athlete increased the probability of promotion 11.4 percent, being a Varsity athlete increased the probability of promotion 7.7 percent, and being a Blue-chip non-athlete increased the probability of promotion 6.4 percent.

This research analyzes the impact of the United States Naval Academy's club sport and varsity athletic programs on midshipman academic and military performance. Linear%ear regression models are developed for the Naval Academy classes of 1998 and 1999 to analyze the effect of explanatory variables on midshipmen Academic Quality Point Rating (AQPR) and Military Quality Point Rating (MQPR). It is important to understand the relationship between athletic programs and academic and military performance so that the Academy leadership can objectively evaluate and maximize positive effects these programs have on preparing midshipmen to assume the responsibilities that await them upon graduation. The study concludes that sufficient evidence exists to suggest that the United States Naval Academy should continue to foster strong varsity and club sport athletic programs. Beyond the officer-like qualities that are directly taught on the athletic field, significant participation in these programs does enhance the military performance of midshipman. Specifically, MQPR was positively affected when a student-athlete won a letter in either a varsity or club sport. There is also some evidence to suggest that performance in the classroom may benefit as well, but it is not as convincing as in the case of military performance. Specifically, when all valid AQPRs are used in the analysis, AQPR was positively affected when a student-athlete won a letter in eider a varsity or club sport. When only graduates were used, however, the significance levels of the coefficients were not above the threshold, and no conclusion could be made reading the effect of letter winning AQPR.

This study examines fleet retention rates of USNA graduates who participated in varsity athlete programs from 1988 to 1990 and retained beyond their initial service obligation (N 2,735). It is based on a theoretical model which investigates two forces of influence on retention: varsity athlete status as a positive influence and recruit status as a negative influence. Results of the hierarchical logistic regression analyses validate the theoretical model and suggest that varsity athletic participation and recruit status do have an impact on fleet retention rates. The negative retention influence of recruit status and the positive retention influence of varsity athletic participation are observed through the interaction of these two forces. Results indicate that recruit status is significantly related to lower retention rates, however, this negative force is counterbalanced by the positive influence of sustained varsity athletic participation, should the athlete have the perseverance to letter in his or her sport. This study also identifies the walk-on varsity athlete as the true beneficiary of the human capital benefits associated with varsity athletic participation. The walk-on varsity athlete acquires leadership and teamwork skills attributed to participation in varsity athletics without the negative recruit influence.

The United States Naval Academy is the premier source of officers for the Naval service. A Naval Academy diploma and commission into the Navy or Marine Corps requires a four-year total immersion into military culture, leadership training, and a demanding academic curriculum. The Naval Academy's unique style of leadership training prepares young men and women for service to their country is an artful combination of mental, physical, and emotional development processes. These processes culminate into a performance measure called the Military Performance grade. This research uses detailed literature reviews to support the operationalized model of the Naval Academy's midshipman development process. The model uses secondary data from the Bowman-Mehay data files for Naval Academy classes 1980 through 1985. Evaluated in this research are the outcomes of the Linear and LOGIT regressions of the fleet success measures of Officer Performance, Promotion, and Retention. This research indicates some surprising results about the role of academics, physical education, athletics, and the Military Performance grade on the development of future Naval officers. The Military Performance grade is consistently the best predictor of fleet success measures.

The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of different personality traits on performance at the US Naval Academy (USNA) throughout the entire military and academic curriculum. The study uses over 18,000 observations during a 15 year time period from 2002-2016. This study builds on previous research which focuses on more narrow performance measures that are typically restricted to academic performance in a single course or subject. The data set allows for performance to be measured in each of USNAs three mission areas (moral, mental, and physical) and provides insight into how certain personality attributes contribute to success in a rigorous military environment. I find that strong "judging" types, typically described as planned, decisive, and organized, perform statistically significantly better than their neutral counterparts in every performance category. Similarly, strong "perceiving" types, described as flexible, open and spontaneous, are found to perform statistically significantly worse than their neutral counterparts in every performance category. The study also finds that black students who are strong "extroverted" types, meaning they are oriented outwardly and dervie their energy from social interactions, perform statistically significantly better in overall order of merit, military order of merit, and academic order of merit compared to neutral students.
