Immunological Aspects of Mammalian Reproduction

Immunological Aspects of Mammalian Reproduction PDF Author: Peter J. Hogarth
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9401168598
Category : Science

Pages : 265

Book Description
Until quite recently, the field of reproductive immunology was very much a neglected area of biology, seen by most reproductive physiologists as of only peripheral importance. It was generally acknowledged as curious that a female mammal tolerated the intrusion of alien sperm and the persisting presence of an alien fetus, while reserving the prerogative of rejecting grafts of tissue, even when these were from her own mate. Several theories were advanced to explain this paradox, each with some supporting evidence: all were eventually shown to be inadequate. And there the matter was, on the whole, permitted to rest. In the last few years, the situation has changed dramatically, and the neglected area of overlap between immunology and reproduction has again become densely populated by research workers. As a symptom of this resurgence of interest, a specialist journal (the Journal of Reproductive Immunology) has been launched to supply what had rapidly been perceived as a need.

Immunology of Animal Reproduction

Immunology of Animal Reproduction PDF Author: Y. Hari Babu
Publisher: New India Publishing
ISBN: 9381450722
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 6

Book Description
The book is intended to the students involved in the study of microbiology, immunology, and animal reproduction as an introduction to more extensive studies. An overview of immunology is provided in the book to refer immediately any basic information needed, for further understanding of the subject dealt in this book. The chapters covered may provide the structural component for the basic understanding of the reproductive immunology in animals. It is designed to complement, but not to compete with the few books available with regard to reproduction. The book is profusely illustrated with figures and tables. The concise nature of the book and the simple and clear treatment of the topics, it is hopefully will prove to be useful to all.

Immunobiology of Reproduction

Immunobiology of Reproduction PDF Author: Joan S. Hunt
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461384222
Category : Health & Fitness
Languages : en
Pages : 360

Book Description
Over the last several decades, many biologists have been intrigued with the "immunological paradox" of pregnancy, where maternal and fetal tissues peaceably coexist despite their genetic differences. With the development of new insights on the interactive components of the immune system as well as the generation of powerful new molecular and cellular tools, singular progress has been made in understanding immunological events that culminate in successful pregnancy. This volume contains the proceedings for the first US symposium on the "Immunobiology of Reproduction" held August 26 - 29, 1993 in Boston, Massachusetts. Papers address hemotopoietic cells in reproductive tissues; growth factors/cytokines in the female reproductive tract and placenta; growth factor networks in pregnancy loss and cancer; placental expression of major histocompatibility complex and associated genes; experimental models of MHC gene expression; and immunological aspects of human infertility.

Immunological Aspects of Reproduction in Mammals

Immunological Aspects of Reproduction in Mammals PDF Author: D. B. Crighton
Publisher: Butterworth-Heinemann
ISBN: 1483162958
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 542

Book Description
Immunological Aspects of Reproduction in Mammals contains papers presented during a symposium at the University of Nottingham Easter School. The scholarly presentations provide a wealth of information on the field of reproductive immunology and indicate just how complex this field is and how many questions still remain to be answered. The book begins with reviews of the current status of the complexities and uncertainties of the cellular basis of the immune response and the structure and function of antibodies. This is followed by separate chapters on the assessment and interpretation of the phenomena surrounding autoimmune and isoimmune reactions to spermatozoa; advances in defining the distribution and degree of exposure of major histocompatibility antigens; the reproductive immunology of the mouse, horse, and sheep; and fetal and neonatal immunity. Subsequent chapters present studies of immunization of several species with either the hypothalamic hormone LH-RH, pituitary gonadotrophins, or ovarian steroids; and studies directed towards efforts to enhance animal production by either active or passive immunization of female farm animals against steroid hormones. This book will be a valuable reference text for those already involved in the field and a stimulus for others to enter this complex and fascinating area of research.

Mammalian Reproductive Biology

Mammalian Reproductive Biology PDF Author: F. H. Bronson
Publisher: University of Chicago Press
ISBN: 9780226075594
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 340

Book Description
A unique interdisciplinary overview of the way mammals reproduce, this volume synthesizes research done by laboratory physiologists, behaviorists, population ecologists, and animal breeders. F. H. Bronson has drawn together the disparate literature in these areas to provide students and researchers with a comprehensive and biologically integrated approach to the study of mammalian reproduction. Each chapter presents a wealth of issues and questions, summarizing the current consensus on interpretations as well as viable alternatives under debate. The book is principally concerned with how environmental factors regulate reproduction. Bronson proposes that a mammal's reproductive performance routinely reflects simultaneous regulation by several environmental factors that interact in fascinatingly complex ways. Environment is defined broadly, and the chapters give equal weight to ecological and physiological factors when considering how variables such as food availability, ambient temperature, photoperiod, and social cues interact to regulate a mammal's reproduction. Particular attention is given to seasonal breeding, and a taxonomically arranged chapter underscores the importance of comparative and evolutionary biology to an understanding of mammalian reproduction. Mammalian Reproductive Biology is a powerful argument for the value and importance of interdisciplinary approaches to research. Its almost 1,500 references constitute the most comprehensive bibliography to date on this topic. Bronson also gives detailed consideration to promising areas for future research. Well organized, carefully planned, and clearly written, this book will become standard reading for scientists concerned with any aspect of mammalian biology.
