Not illustrated. 1855 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER XIX. LETTERS APOSTOLIC OF OUR MOST HOLY LORD PIUS IX, BY DIVINE PROVIDENCE POPE, CONCERNING THE DOGMATIC DEFINITION OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION OF THE VIRGIN MOTHER OF GOD. Pius, Bishop, Servant of the Servants of God. For the perpetual remembrance of the thing. The Ineffable God, whose ways are mercy and truth, whose will is omnipotence, and whose wisdom reaches powerfully from end to end, and sweetly disposes everything, when He foresaw from all eternity the most sorrowful ruin of the entire human race to follow from the transgression of Adam, and in a mystery hidden from ages determined to complete, through the incarnation of the Word in a more hidden sacrament, the first work of his goodness, so that man, led into sin by the craft of diabolical iniquity, should not perish contrary to His merciful design, and that what was about to befall in the first Adam should be restored more happily in the second; from the beginning and before ages chose and ordained a Mother for His only-begotten Son, of whom made flesh, He should be born in the blessed plenitude of time, and followed her with so great love before all creatures that in her alone He pleased Himself with a most benign complacency. Wherefore, far before all the angelic spirits and all the Saints, He so wonderfully endowed her with the abundance of all the heavenly gifts drawn from the treasure of divinity, that she might be ever free from every stain of sin, and all fair and perfect, would bear before her that plenitude of innocence and holiness than which, under God, none greater is understood, and which, except God, no one can reach even in thought. And indeed it was most becoming that she would shine always adorned with the splendor of the most perfect holiness, and...

The Dogma of the Immaculate Conception

The Dogma of the Immaculate Conception PDF Author: Edward Dennis O'Connor
Publisher:

Pages : 716

Book Description
In The Dogma of the Immaculate Conception: History and Significance (University of Notre Dame Press, 1958; reissued 2016), thirteen European and American theologians treat the historical development and theological significance of a major Roman Catholic doctrine. Edward Dennis O'Connor, C.S.C., a specialist in mediaeval theology, notes in his preface that the subject of the Virgin Mary's Immaculate Conception was first discussed about the year 1100. The doctrine was defined by Pope Pius IX in 1854 after about seventy-five years of "what was perhaps the most prolonged and passionate debate that has ever been carried on in Catholic theology." The importance of any doctrine, however, "does not lie chiefly in its history, but in its intrinsic significance as truth, and in its rank in the hierarchy of truth, which do not depend on historical contingencies." From this point of view, the Immaculate Conception is of immense importance not only for Mariology but also for the theology of the Redemption and of the Church. The essays in The Dogma of the Immaculate Conception are broad-ranging studies both of the history of doctrinal development and the major aspects of the doctrine. It includes chapters ranging from "Scripture and the Immaculate Conception" to "The Immaculate Conception in Art," over fifty illustrations, and an exhaustive bibliography of the European literature on the doctrine published from 1830 to 1957. Contributors include: Monsignor Charles Journet, Monsignor Georges Jouassard, Francis Dvornik, Cornelius A. Bouman, Carlo Balc, O.F.M., Wenceslaus Sebastian, O.F.M., Ren Laurentin, Marie-Joseph Nicolas, O.P., Urban Mullaney, O.P., Charles DeKoninck, George Anawati, O.P., Maurice Vloberg, and Edward O'Connor, C.S.C. Edward Dennis O'Connor, C.S.C., is associate professor emeritus of theology at the University of Notre Dame. He was involved in the charismatic movement and has authored several works about it, including The Pentecostal Movement in the Catholic Church and Marian Apparitions Today: Why So Many'.
