The object of this research was to find possible ways to identify and separate vat dyes by a thin-layer chromatography (TLC) technique. The main point of this study was to search for suitable TLC systems (i.e. eluents, adsorbent). Six reducing agents were examined for use in reducing eluents and over 60 such reducing eluents in a nitrogen atmosphere were treated for their effectiveness separating vat dyes by TLC. The temperature of the systems was generally 50°c to 60°c. Silica gel and reversed phase plates were investigated for suitability with such systems. Over 100 systems were examined for the analysis of vat dyes at 100°c or 120°c under non-reducing condition. Nine eluents giving the best migration and resolution were selected. The variation of Rf values with the temperature of the system, chemical structure of vat dyes, plates, dye dispersion, and contamination of adsorbent as well as with the eluents were studied. The results showed that vat dyes could satisfactorily be separated by using mixtures of high boiling-point solvents as eluents.
