Excerpt from Horticultural Register, and Gardener's Magazine, 1839, Vol. 4 With the desire to gratify our readers we shall give some of the reasons, which, to our mind appear the most conclusive. It is gen erally admitted I believe, that they belong to the royal family, and that their ancestors once wielded the sceptre upon the throne of China, and indeed there is every thing in their appearance to sub stentiate this belief. The present Emperor is a descendant of the Tartar race. It would not require a very excursive imagination to conclude that as they did not belong to the present dynasty, some jealousies might have arisen from the fact that they were of that race that once controlled the destinies of that mighty empire, and which was now governed by a foreign power. Again, there might have been those that still retained all their former attachment to the rem nant of that noble house which, no doubt, excited the jealousies of the reigning powers and rendered their situation very unpleasant, and would be deemed a sufficient reason for leaving their native country, as others have done before them. Still there are those that have asked why, as they were so pleasantly situated in Europe, they should have thought of coming to this country. To this and simi lar questions we can only give some of our own conjectures, never having conversed with them upon this subject. We may suppose for instance, that they might have had a predilection in favor ofour own republican form of government and its free institutions, and that they would meet with that kindness and attention which true merit ever receives from an educated and enlightened community. Others might have come to the resolution that a friend of ours did, that they would not live in a country where they were obliged to pay for that free and common gift to all, the light of heaven. According to the suggestion of a correspondent, volume first, page 225, we intend in our Naturalists Calendar, giving three or four small figures of British plants every month, to assist those Botanical students in collecting a herbarian, who have it not in their power to purchase any other work on the subject; also to those who wish to study British Choncology, and have not the means of purchasing a work on the subject, we intend in the same calendar to give one or two of our land or water shells every month. This we think will bean acquisition to the young British Naturalist, as itwill place something more. Within his reach than heretofore he was able to obtain. By thus using means to meet the varied wants of the risingrace of gardeners, they will have in a few years a large store of knowledge, which under other circumstances, might have never reached their ears. The system of propagating Vines, by coiling the branches in pots, is cleverly advocated and explained by Mr. Mearns, whose well known abilities render his remarks dou bly valuable, because they may be entirely depended upon. The mode of successfully growing Vines in Pots is again taken up by Mr. Stafford and others; this cannot be too much recommended, indeed we hope to see the day, when the Culture of Vines in Pots shall be generally adopted, not to the exclusion of those on the Rafters, but as auxiliaries to supply the table at seasons when it would be inconvenient or dificult to put those on the Rafters into action. A Classification of Garden Peas, including the height, qualities, season of use, &c. Is given by Mr. Townsend, which, as a remembrancer to the experienced, and to assist in the instruction of the young Gardener, will be very useful. The system of Heating with hot-water is also explained at length, and Engravings given explanatory of the same, together with many other things of general utility.
