Book Description
The purpose of this study is to examine the uses and acoustical effects of the mute for horn. The study is in four chapters. Two chapters deal primarily with the mute's history. The first of these is a chronological study of the use of the mute which also includes information on makers of mutes and the progress of mute design. The second chapter is an in-depth study of the muted horn parts found in the works of the composers of the Second Viennese School: Schoenberg, Berg, and Webern. A direct examination of all available scores was made for the study of the muted horn parts in the works of these composers which includes: frequency of use of muted parts, their range and dynamics, length of muted solos and section parts, and the use of muted parts with other effects, such as stopping and fluttertonguing. The third chapter of the paper is an explanation of the acoustical aspects of the mute; how it changes the tonal color of the horn, as well as how it affects the pitch and response of the instrument. For this chapter, the writer also consulted several eminent acousticians who had done previous research with brass instrument mutes. The final chapter of the dissertation is a catalog of currently available non-transposing mutes for horn. The catalog is prefaced by an explanation of testing procedures used by the writer in the study, as well as suggestions for helping other horn players choose a mute for their own particular use. This testing was done under identical conditions, and comprised playing alone as well as within the various ensembles (orchestra, brass and woodwind quintets) in which the writer usually performs. The data assembled from this testing covered such aspects as sound quality, pitch problems, the dimensions and materials, cost and availability.

Horn Playing from the Inside Out, Third Edition

Horn Playing from the Inside Out, Third Edition PDF Author: Eli Epstein
Publisher:
ISBN: 9780985427238
Category :
Languages : en
Pages :

Book Description
This book is a result of Eli Epstein's 18 years in the Cleveland Orchestra and 30 years of Conservatoire teaching. It breaks down into four parts, dealing with Technique, Musicianship, Warm up and Exercises and finally Applying the Method. It is both innovative and inspiring and presents his theories in a clear and understandable way, which gives the reader much to think about and practical ideas to help improve one's playing. An excellent addition to any horn enthusiast's collection. The third edition presents MRI images and data of an elite group of horn players, including Stefan Dohr, Fergus McWilliam, Sarah Willis, Stefan Jezierski (all of the Berlin Philharmonic), Marie-Luise Neunecker, Jeff Nelsen, and others. MRI films confirm that what we do internally, inside the mouth, pharynx, and thoracic cavity is just as important as what we do externally. And, just as there are hallmarks of healthy embouchures that most professional horn players employ, there are many consistent internal movement patterns among the elite group. Epstein presents tried and true methods to learn and teach these exemplary biomechanics. "Without a doubt the most physiologically correct book ever published on horn playing." ~John Ericson, Horn Matters

Technical Studies for the Cornet

Technical Studies for the Cornet PDF Author: Herbert L. Clarke
Publisher: Colchis Books
ISBN:
Category : Music
Languages : en
Pages : 55

Book Description
There are many books written for the Piano, Violin, etc., entirely devoted to Technic. This Work is especially written to enable the Student, by practice and application, to overcome any obstacle which may occur in musical passages written for the Cornet. By controlling the Wind Power to play these Exercises as written, in one breath, the Student will acquire ENDURANCE without strain or injury. Train the Muscles which control the Lips, to make them elastic and strong, as only a slight pressure is necessary, and not brute force. The highest as well as the lowest notes can be played with equal tone quality if practiced according to the instructions that precede each Study. Every Cornet Player should have reached a degree of excellence before attempting to play these Exercises. To become an Expert on the Cornet, one should be familiar with as many Cornet Methods as possible, and so gain the experience of each. Every Exercise in this Book is possible, and not so very difficult if practiced slowly at first, and not too long at a time. I have used them for my daily practice for years, and they have been the means of my reaching the highest notes after playing a two-hour Concert, also of preserving my lips so that they never tire, and what has been a help to me is surely good for other Cornet Players. You cannot expect to attain the highest point of excellence without hard work and perseverance. Never be perfectly satisfied with yourself. Try to make some improvement each day, feeling that it is a pleasure to have conquered that which seemed an impossibility at first. Do not neglect to correct immediately the least fault you make. Bad habits are easily formed, but are difficult to remedy. There are few Celebrated Cornet Soloists, although thousands play the instrument. Most players abuse their practicing by not knowing the proper way, and neglecting to pay more attention to the elementary work. These Studies have been found to be excellent for Clarinet Players as well as Cornet Players. The Clarinet being a Wind Instrument also, all these Exercises will appeal to the Player of that Instrument by following the same instructions.
