Redeeming Our Sacred Story

Redeeming Our Sacred Story PDF Author: Mary C. Boys
Publisher: Paulist Press
ISBN: 1587682818
Category : Christianity and antisemitism
Languages : en
Pages : 365

Book Description
Stories of Jesus' passion and death lie at the core of Christian identity. They offer an encounter with his experience of the human condition: betrayals by those closest to him, his own fear of death, uncertainty about God's will, and the endurance of terrible suffering and an ignominious death. From generation to generation, these stories have functioned in sacred and saving ways for Christians. Yet, misinterpretations of the passion narratives have rationalized hostility to and violence against Jews as "Christ killers". This sacrilegious telling cries out for redemption. Redeeming Christianity's sacred story requires respect, even awe, for its power; demands rigorous examination of the history between Jews and Christians and the ethical obligation to be altered by this history; and entails pursuing solid biblical scholarship, principles for reinterpreting troubling texts, and incorporation into Christian spirituality. Redeeming Our Sacred Story challenges us to forge more just relations between Jews and Christians. It witnesses to the world that reconciliation is possible. (Back cover).

St John and the Victorians

St John and the Victorians PDF Author: Michael Wheeler
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1139502158
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 287

Book Description
The Gospel according to St John, often regarded as the most important of the gospels in the account it gives of Jesus' life and divinity, received close attention from nineteenth-century biblical scholars and prompted a significant response in the arts. This original interdisciplinary study of the cultural afterlife of John in Victorian Britain places literature, the visual arts and music in their religious context. Discussion of the Evangelist, the Gospel and its famous prologue is followed by an examination of particular episodes that are unique to John. Michael Wheeler's research reveals the depth of biblical influence on British culture and on individuals such as Ruskin, Holman Hunt and Tennyson. He makes a significant contribution to the understanding of culture, religion and scholarship in the period.

The Homilies of Saint John Chrysostom: On the Gospel of Saint Matthew

The Homilies of Saint John Chrysostom: On the Gospel of Saint Matthew PDF Author: Saint John Chrysostom
Publisher: Aeterna Press

Book Description
THE Homilies of St. Chrysostom on St. Matthew were undoubtedly delivered at Antioch, (see Hom. vii. p. 105.) and probably in the latter part of the time during which he preached as a Presbyter. Montfaucon considers his little mention of the sin of swearing a sign of his having accomplished some reformation on that point by his previous exertions. In the Homilies delivered from 386 to 388, it is a constant topic; and the Homilies known to belong to that date are so numerous, as scarcely to leave room for such a series as the present. These, however, contain very little to mark the period to which they belong. The argument from his reference to dissensions some time gone by, possibly those between St. Meletius and Paulinus and Evagrius, in commenting on St. Matt. 23:6. is not very conclusive.
