The Pilgrim's Progress and The Holy War (Annotated)

The Pilgrim's Progress and The Holy War (Annotated) PDF Author: John Bunyan
Publisher: FV Éditions
ISBN:
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 457

Book Description
Annotated with a Memoir on John Bunyan by Rev. G. Cheever The life of John Bunyan is a very precious record of the grace of God. No other man's history that ever lived is more worthy of study for this particular object–to trace the workings of God's Spirit, in connection with the interpositions of his providence, in carrying on in an individual soul the great work of sanctification, and through that soul, thus prepared, the great work of redemption for multitudes, even to the end of time. The Pilgrim's Progress and The Holy War are his two best books. In both of these masterpieces there is a combination of theology and experience most beautiful and instructive; but in the Holy War it is more the theological form, God working in you; in the Pilgrim's Progress it is more the experimental form, man receiving and working under God's grace.

The Holy War

The Holy War PDF Author: John Bunyan
Publisher: Wipf and Stock Publishers
ISBN: 1725246724
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 332

Book Description
Four years after John Bunyan released his instantly popular journey allegory The Pilgrim's Progress, he published The Holy War--a battle allegory and companion volume. His first book explores salvation of the individual Christian; the second portrays the battle for sanctification. While Christian struggles with questions about assurance of salvation, the collective Mansoul labors with the challenges of being led by and filled with the Holy Spirit. The Pilgrim's Progress focuses on the individual's struggle against sin; The Holy War portrays the Church in a corporate struggle against systemic evil. Bunyan wrote that The Holy War originates in "the same heart, and head, fingers and pen" as The Pilgrim's Progress. Both books present separate dimensions of Bunyan's spiritual journey. Taken together, the journey allegory and the battle allegory capture the full range and depth of the biblical message that consumed Bunyan's imagination. He credits his own salvation to these two things: The grace of God and tenacious, continual, holy warfare. The Holy War is testimony to a spiritual battle he fought, and won. This edition provides annotations that clarify Bunyan's first edition language and message for readers in a post-Puritan world.

Holy War in Ancient Israel

Holy War in Ancient Israel PDF Author: Gerhard von Rad
Publisher: Wipf and Stock Publishers
ISBN: 1579103464
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 175

Book Description
Since the beginning, holy war has been viewed as a 'sacred institution' and a 'cultic act of religious community' by the people of Israel. Appearing here in English for the first time, Gerhard von Rad has provided a definitive study of the theory of holy war and its development throughout biblical history. Von Rad gives a definitive and articulate exposition of a typically disturbing theme within the Old Testament, arguing that holy war is not only Yahweh acting alone, but inspired Israelites, who because they envisioned God fighting on their behalf, felt obligated and inspired to fight even more fervently.

The Crusades, Holy War and Canon Law

The Crusades, Holy War and Canon Law PDF Author: James A. Brundage
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 1040234135
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 299

Book Description
This volume is concerned, above all, with the legal background and the juristic issues behind the ideology and practice of the medieval Crusades. This is an area that the author was the first to investigate systematically, and there are two particular reasons for his approach: one, the conviction that the historical phenomenon of the Crusades can only be adequately understood within the context of the legal systems that permeated the age; the other, that so much of the documentary evidence ” be it charters, decrees even chronicles ” was produced by people whose perceptions had been shaped by the law. A number of articles focus on the roles of individual crusaders, or address ideological questions, including the very concept of Holy War. Others deal with practical issues and the nature of the obligations incurred by a crusader, and examine the consequences these had, both for the institutions of medieval Europe and for the crusader's own family relationships.
