Book Description
“Moving . . . Readers will nod their heads in sympathy with this guy who breaks the rules for all of the right reasons.” —The Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books A Bank Street College of Education Best Book of the Year Indiana Too Good to Miss State Reading List 2018 Timothy is on probation. It’s a strange word—something that happens to other kids, to delinquents, not to kids like him. And yet, he is under house arrest for the next year. He must check in weekly with a probation officer and a therapist, and keep a journal for an entire year. And mostly, he has to stay out of trouble. But when he must take drastic measures to help his struggling family, staying out of trouble proves more difficult than Timothy ever thought it would be. By turns touching and funny, and always original, House Arrest is a middle grade novel in verse about one boy’s path to redemption as he navigates life with a sick brother, a grieving mother, and one tough probation officer. “This gripping novel in verse evokes a wide variety of emotional responses, as it is serious and funny, thrilling and touching, sweet and snarky.” —School Library Journal “Touches of humor lighten the mood, and Holt’s firsthand knowledge of the subject adds depth to this poignant drama without overwhelming it.” —Publishers Weekly “Readers . . . will appreciate Holt’s lessons of compassion and family above all.” —Booklist “House Arrest will hit home with young boys and girls, especially if they have ever dealt with an ill relative. The story is touching, warm, and impressive.” —Kid Lit Reviews

The New Politics of the Textbook
Author: Heather Hickman
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 946091912X
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 339
Book Description
In an age of unprecedented corporate and political control over life inside of educational institutions, this book provides a needed intervention to investigate how the economic and political elite use traditional artifacts in K-16 schools to perpetuate their interests at the expense of minoritized social groups. The contributors provide a comprehensive examination of how textbooks, the most dominant cultural force in which corporations and political leaders impact the schooling curricula, shape students’ thoughts and behavior, perpetuate power in dominant groups, and trivialize social groups who are oppressed on the structural axes of race, class, gender, sexuality, and (dis)ability. Several contributors also generate critical insight in how power shapes the production of textbooks and evaluate whether textbooks still perpetuate dominant Western narratives that normalize and privilege patriotism, militarism, consumerism, White supremacy, heterosexism, rugged individualism, technology, and a positivistic conception of the world. Finally, the book highlights several textbooks that challenge readers to rethink their stereotypical views of the Other, to reflect upon the constitutive forces causing oppression in schools and in the wider society, and to reflect upon how to challenge corporate and political dominance over knowledge production.

Essentials of Excel, Excel VBA, SAS and Minitab for Statistical and Financial Analyses
Author: Cheng-Few Lee
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319388673
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 1043
Book Description
This introductory textbook for business statistics teaches statistical analysis and research methods via business case studies and financial data using Excel, Minitab, and SAS. Every chapter in this textbook engages the reader with data of individual stock, stock indices, options, and futures. One studies and uses statistics to learn how to study, analyze, and understand a data set of particular interest. Some of the more popular statistical programs that have been developed to use statistical and computational methods to analyze data sets are SAS, SPSS, and Minitab. Of those, we look at Minitab and SAS in this textbook. One of the main reasons to use Minitab is that it is the easiest to use among the popular statistical programs. We look at SAS because it is the leading statistical package used in industry. We also utilize the much less costly and ubiquitous Microsoft Excel to do statistical analysis, as the benefits of Excel have become widely recognized in the academic world and its analytical capabilities extend to about 90 percent of statistical analysis done in the business world. We demonstrate much of our statistical analysis using Excel and double check the analysis and outcomes using Minitab and SAS—also helpful in some analytical methods not possible or practical to do in Excel.

Conscious Parenting Workbook
Author: Bhadra Mitchell
Publisher: SCB Distributors
ISBN: 1935387987
Category : Family & Relationships
Languages : en
Pages : 127
Book Description
By choosing to parent children, or to serve as a friend, educator or informal mentor, you have taken up an admirable and challenging task. Committing yourself to the care and education of children sets you on a journey that is ripe with enormous opportunities for personal growth, expanded love, joy, self-understanding and compassion. It also introduces you to areas of your own life that may have been unexamined, confronting you with limiting beliefs and issues of your own self-esteem. This Workbook is the companion volume to Conscious Parenting by Lee Lozowick (Hohm Press, 2010), and is designed be a useful map and “travel” guide for you on this adventure. The Conscious Parenting Workbook (like Conscious Parenting itself) aims to assist you in aligning with a big view of the subject – an overall context from which to parent and educate. Years of personal experience, combined with solid foundations shared with many great educators, have made Lee Lozowick’s Conscious Parenting a pragmatic handbook, much appreciated by his peers and by thousands of parents worldwide. But especially, and perhaps uniquely, his work relies on life-affirming principles culled from his own spiritual understanding along with those from other longstanding spiritual traditions. His work, then, speaks to the ways and means for transforming ordinary family life with children into a primary means of spiritual practice, including the inevitable challenge for work-on-self.
