Book Description
Percutaneous lumbar discectomy is a new surgical method for treating lumbar disc diseases. The goal of the procedure is decompression of the spinal nerve root by percutaneous removal of the nucleus pulposus under local anesthesia. Probably 20 % of all patients requiring lumbar disc surgery can be successfully treated by this method. During the past two years, percutaneous discectomy has spread rapidly, and it is now performed in most clinical departments engaged in spinal surgery. The first International Symposium on Percutaneous Lumbar Discectomy, held in Berlin in August 1988, covered all current procedures known as "percutaneous discectomy" and the entire range of percutaneous techniques, both clinical and experimental. Its publication is important because of the recency of this new surgical procedure, the outstanding experience of the speakers - including the Japanese, American, and European "pioneers" of the technique - and last but not least the gaps in the knowledge of physicians concerning this topic. This procedure opens up new perspectives in the surgical treatment of degenerative diseases of the lumbar spine.

Biomechanics of Spine Stabilization
Author: Edward C. Benzel
Publisher: Thieme
ISBN: 9781879284821
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 552
Book Description
Biomechanics of Spine Stabilization bridges the gap that has existed between the physics of biomechanical research and the clinical arena. The book helps surgeons to plan treatments for the injured spine based on sound biomechanical principles -- principles that will influence the surgeon's choice for the surgical approach, type of fusion, and type of instrumentation. Biomechanics of Spine Stabilization begins with the essentials, proceeds gradually toward the development of an understanding of biomechanical principles, and finally, provides a basis for clinical decision-making. These features make it a cover-to-cover "must-read" for anyone who is involved with the care of a patient with an unstable spine.

Three Invaders
Author: Saleem Abdulrauf
Publisher:
ISBN: 9780578706245
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 418
Book Description
For decades, politicians have debated and posed solutions for the troubled region we know as the "Middle East" to no avail. Professor Saleem Abdulrauf, a world-renowned American neurosurgeon with ancestral roots in the Arabian Peninsula, has developed innovative solutions in his field, and in this book, he applies his expertise to solving the mystery that is the "Middle East." Professor Abdulrauf has operated on hundreds of patients with complex brain tumors and aneurysms; the process of treating such life-threatening conditions involves a review of published data and critical analysis of available treatment options. In some cases, Professor Abdulrauf has had to think outside the box to develop new surgical techniques and instruments to cure his patients. He has learned to systematically and scientifically break down a problem to come up with effective solutions. In Three Invaders, Professor Abdulrauf employs this strategy to evaluate the situation in the "Middle East" and present novel solutions. He shares with the reader omitted historical facts and provides insights into previously undisclosed geopolitics of popular culture-in particular, the 2,000-year cultural, military, and political history of the interaction among the peoples of the three Abrahamic religions (Judaism, Christianity, and Islam), with a special focus on the past 100 years.

Neurosurgery and Global Health
Author: Isabelle M. Germano
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3030866564
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 377
Book Description
This book is a combination of ideas and experiences from over 100 dedicated and brilliant neurosurgeons around the world. Their common goal is to provide data for a deeper understanding of the multi-faceted aspects of neurosurgery and, by doing so, to better serve patients across the globe. Scientific curiosity, deep dedication, incredible work ethics, entrepreneurship, and creativity are the common traits among all neurosurgeons, and not the exception. By allowing readers to see the field of neurosurgery from the perspectives of surgeons spanning five continents, this book serves to provide multiple, diverse viewpoints and to build a foundation for future collaborations. The book’s 24 chapters are organized into 3 parts. Part I provides the reader with an overview of the role of neurosurgery in worldwide health care, its evolution over the past decades, the current state and future directions of each neurosurgical subspecialty across the five continents. Over the years, the overarching goal for neurosurgeons has been to develop new, more effective and high-end solutions for complex diseases and to provide access to neurosurgical services for all patients. Part II discusses the differences and similarities of neurosurgery education and training across the globe, providing a snapshot of how new tools, technology, and paradigms reduce inequality and increase access to neurosurgical education. Educational accomplishments and challenges still present for the in different regions of the world are reviewed. Part III focuses on economic aspects influencing neurosurgery globally, including how to make efficient decisions in the face of scarcity, yet demand. The authors provide theories, models, and tools helpful to apply when planning to allocate resources, not just financial, but also human and intellectual. A deeper understanding of economics does not necessarily provide the answer to the problem; rather it provides the tools to find an answer, or, ideally, multiple possible solutions. Neurosurgery and Global Health is the first comprehensive guide to the role of neurosurgery in the global health care sphere, providing an in-depth compendium about the understanding of the neurosurgical role within global health, its efforts in the education of tomorrow’s workforce, and the economic aspects driving the field.

Ethics in Neurosurgical Practice
Author: Stephen Honeybul
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 110864046X
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 275
Book Description
Neurosurgical interventions have the potential to change a person's concept of self, as well as affect their neurological and cognitive function to an unacceptable level for both patient and family. In an increasingly complex and evolving field, the ethical implications of treatments and their eventual outcomes must be carefully balanced. Ethics in Neurosurgical Practice is a comprehensive and practical guide for managing the treatment of patients with debilitating neurosurgical conditions. Chapters address specific conditions, such as traumatic brain injuries, ischemic stroke and spinal surgery, and the ethical challenges that each of these pose. Detailed case studies present potential scenarios that readers might encounter, and their outcomes. Future developments of this fast-paced field are expanded upon, including televised live surgery and the ethical aspects of innovation in neurosurgery. A broad variety of contributors in different fields, including neurosurgeons, intensivists and bioethicists, ensures comprehensive coverage from a range of views and experiences.
