Book Description
Excerpt from The History of the Church of Christ: In Continuation of the Work of the Rev. Joseph Milner, M. An; And the Very Rev. Isaac Milner, D. D. F. R. S.; The Sequel of the Swiss Reformation, Including the Entire History of Farel, Calvin, and the Reformation of Geneva The present volume contains the sequel of the Swiss Reformation; including the latter years of Zwingle and colampadius, and the entire history of Farel, Calvin, and the reformation of Geneva. Zwingle will here appear, and I trust upon sufficient grounds, in a more favourable light than he has often been represented. Not only his great talents and his independent mind, but the general soundness of his doctrine and the depth of his evangelical piety will become apparent. With the exception of some indiscretions, which are well known, upon two or three points, we shall find little else to regret than the extravagant length to which he carried certain high doctrines, perhaps rather upon philosophical than theological principles: and even this fault does not seem to have much affected the general style and character of his instructions. The letters of colampadius will place that learned and holy man high in our esteem, both for his wisdom and his piety. To attempt to give an account of the life and the writings of Calvin may be pronounced, in the present age, "plenum opus aleae" - a work full of hazard. Respecting no divine probably has public feeling been so strongly excited and so widely divided: and to a great degree it continues still to be so, when nearly three centuries have rolled away.
